From Cassava Films, Mark Tapio Kines directs what is probably one of the
weirder short films I've seen in a while. Casting an actual married
couple "Ron and Nancy" explores the sick and sometimes absolutely
surreal lengths couples are willing to go to spice up their sex lives
and increase communications with each other. After watching it I wasn't
entirely sure if I enjoyed it, but after another viewing I basically
couldn't help but like it because the performances are so off the wall
it's absolutely charming. Stars Tyler Rhoades and Erika Godwin have very
good chemistry and they are almost always dead on with their comic
timing.
Though
they're innocently suggesting fetishes to one another in
order to see what sticks, it becomes an interesting gag to view
the other partner's expressions when fetishes like Vore and
Frog Mouth comes up (Trust me, you don't want to know what
they are) the film becomes increasingly sharp and clever.
While "Ron and Nancy" may not be for everyone, it will
definitely appeal to people who understand how desperate
couples get when they want to increase the frequency of
their sexual experiences.
Kines's direction
is fairly simple relying instead on setting a tone that keeps the
movie's pacing rather fast since it is fairly under ten minutes.
Kines doesn't have limitations when it comes to bending the genre
for this short. While some may classify it as a romance comedy, the
inevitable special effects presentation of Vore along with the
awfully weird final scene ultimately shows that this short film is
impossible to peg in to one genre. "Ron and Nancy" has an
eccentricity about it that eventually won me over and I think it's a
pretty good entry from the Cassava team.
While it may not be for
everyone, "Ron and Nancy" is a surreal look at the lengths some people
are willing to go to spice up their relations with their loved ones and
takes an interesting look at a few fetishes even I didn't know existed.
