THE
ROOMMATE

I wouldn't call "The Roommate" one of the worst films of 2011. I would just call it one of the most boring and tedious thriller outings released in the last five years. Yet another uncredited remake of "Single White Female," director Christian E. Christiansen's dramatic thriller is nothing but a ninety minute excuse to trot out some stylish young actors, all of whom need a resume credit badly. And there's literally no other reason for this film existing that I can possibly fathom, right now. Billy Zane collects a paycheck in a humiliating and rather ho hum supporting role, Aly Michalka is spewed out the hype machine yet again while displaying no actual charisma to her role, and for some reason currently in style actress Nina Dobrev appears for a cameo. "The Roommate" seems to have been made only to display a highlight of new young actors all looking for a direction in Hollywood and they're all put on display in a film that should have been direct to DVD fodder all along. If you've seen the utterly mediocre "Single White Female" then you know the drill behind "The Roommate." In the end you're left wondering how so much of this carnage occurs without anyone but the main characters catching on.
And Kelly is definitely not up to the challenge to portray this psychotic persona as she fails to deliver even the most uneasy of performances throughout the duration. She spends more time glaring at characters blankly and displaying empty threats, but never quite follows through on her threats. There's no reason for anyone to quite fear Kelly's character, even in the climax. It'd be against the PG-13 rating if character Sara ever actually kills anyone, so for the remainder of the film she does nothing but act like a spoiled passive aggressive brat who shouts at people and offers cold threats to individuals she deems rivals. For most of the film there's not a clear indication if she's actually homicidal, so it comes as no shock when most of the characters fail to take her at all seriously. Most of the film is devoted to the "will she or won't she?" mentality behind the character Sara, and in reality: She doesn't. "The Roommate" is one dry hump of almost thrills that are incredibly lackluster and void of any sort of suspense or tension. The body count is non-existent and there's no real clarification as to whether the title psycho is dangerous or not. She murders a kitten in a tantrum, but that's about as vicious as the film ever really gets. The entire cast is filled with utterly dull personalities, all of whom fail to lure audiences in to sympathize toward their plight, and even when they're put in danger, we don't really care. This is one of the obviously fictional films where everyone looks like a super model, and you simply can not relate to these stuffy college students and their turmoil revolving around this spoiled young girl who really never makes good on her promises and threats until the very end. And once we're subjected to the anti-climactic stand off, it's all so old hat and safely tied together that we never feel as if we're put in to any immediate danger. There's no blood shed, no lives are taken, and we know Leighton Meester will make it out with barely any scratches or trauma to speak of. This is a world of mannequins crashing in to mannequins, a cheap excuse just to trot out in vogue stars and nothing else. It's one of the absolutely inept films of 2011.
