SEANCE

A local baroness has died, and she's hidden a small fortune in her humongous castle for no one to claim after she passed away. Anxious to claim the fortune for themselves, two men from the local village enlist the likes of young innocent Marie, a spiritualist with abilities to reach the after life. The problem with their bid for Marie's services is that the local Baroness engaged in rituals and practices that were most questionable and what they're about to tackle is something neither of them can handle, not even Marie whose powers encompass their own imaginations.

Directed by Robin Kasparik this European short horror film works in every way possible building on the tension of these hapless individuals allowing greed and potential wealth to completely overcome their own common sense. When they happen upon this large castle and go over the past of this mysterious baroness even the young Marie allows herself to be persuaded with the potential to grabbing a hold of this baroness's fortune and in classic horror that deals with the concept of karma, they're ultimately hoisted on their own pitard.

When Marie begins to summon the baroness from the after life, Kasparik enlists the old devices of the horror genre by playing with the audiences tension. With startling cinematography he induces the play of shadow and light by soaking the scenery with shadows that could be manipulated once Marie begins to use her powers to conjure up the baroness and we're given a full grasp of the character's powers as spirits burst forth from floors and walls, darkness captures these characters and situations go from bad to worse when violence strikes. By the time Marie decides it's time to turn back, it's ultimately too late and Kasparik enlists some rather fantastic make up effects and quick editing to bring about the final scene that's both very uneasy and quite terrifying. I sat on the edge of my seat the entire time flinching and jumping at every jolt and shock, and "Seance" is a very competent little horror entry for people who enjoy old fashioned scary stories.

With great performances, top notch special effects, and fantastic direction and cinematography, "Seance" is a wonderful horror short with a classic story of greed ultimately getting the better of us and allowing evil to reign once again.
