Heartache and heartbreak. Character comebacks in
more ways than one. It's all there. And it is
all awesome. This is my book of the week. Leinil
hits it out of the park. Bendis writes an
awesome continuation on the first part of this 7
part epic. There are only so many things the
Crisis can do, and bringing back Barry Allen
probably won't stop the Skrullgasm from winning
this event war.
So the battle starts, the heroes fight the
heroes, and the voice of reason? Ares? What the
hell? He continually shouts about the Skrulls
using this to keep them away from the actual
war, and it is SO great to hear said outloud in
a comic. Let's not fight the heroes as they
might actually be heroes. Let's not get in the
middle of this misunderstanding battle and make
an attempt to get back to NYC to figure out what
is going on. A hero saying that? And it's the
God of War? HA!
They do fight, however. 70s Spider-man with
underwebbing? Skrull. 70s Hawkeye? Skrull.
Mockingbird? Maybe not a Skrull. Ronineye
vouches for her, and him grabbing the bow and
arrow from Skrulleye and using it against the
70s heroes was an awesome touch. It will suck to
see no mas Ronin, but seeing the real Hawkeye
back will be awesome.
70s Vision? Probably a Skrull. He fights with
the Sentry and tells him it's all his fault. The
Void is back. And the Skrulls are DEATHLY afraid
of Sentry. He's the only one strong enough to
throw them all in the sun, so it makes perfect
sense for them to try to take him out of the
equation as quickly as possible.
Ronineye shoots an arrow at 70s Cap, who is the
only one quick enough to block him, prompting
Ronineye to think it's the real Cap. Mockingbird
agrees, but it makes no sense. Bru has gone on
record as saying there was no Skrull Cap in his
book. So I really hope this isn't Cap. If they
want to bring him back, there has to be a better
way. This doesn't seem like the right fit for
the character at all.
Ms Marvel takes Tony into the heart of the
jungle to reconfigure his armor and try to do
what he can to attack the virus that has been
loaded into his Extremis and save himself while
trying to take out the Skrull beacon and stop
the invasion. But he just might be too late as
the Young Avengers learn in the middle of NYC as
they go toward the Baxter Building and a MASSIVE
Skrull-ship opens to reveal a TON of Super-skrulls.
Regular old Super-Skrulls with the powers of the
Fantastic Four. Spider-Man Villain Super-Skrulls
(part Doc Ock, part Sandman, part awesome?).
Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy Super-Skrulls.
Illuminati Super-Skrulls (Doc Strange, Black
Bolt). Giant-Man Super-Skrull. Archangel Super-Skrull.
Captain America Super-Skrull. Thor Super-Skrull.
Wolverine/Cyclops/Colossus Super-Skrulls. And
even more. Awesome.
Bendis does a really really good job in this
issue. One of the Cages are Skrulls and I think
it's New Avengers Cage. He's too easily
persuaded and changes his opinion quickly.
Wolverine trusts no one and almost kills
Mockingbird, but is stopped by Ronineye, and
that follows one of the other better quiet
moments of the issue, October 12th, the test
Clint gives to Mockingbird to prove who she is
(which is quickly refuted by Wolverine as not
being proof of anything because how do they know
he's really Clint).
The backstabbing is great. And let's say this: I
am a huge fan of Leinil. Have been for years.
Always will be. And his art is so super-clean in
this that it looks like old-Leinil, early
Wolverine issues Yu. Very clean lines and easy
to read art, and it doesn't look rushed at all.
I have every intention of believing this book
will stay monthly and will stay on time, and
Leinil Yu deserves high accolades for this
comic. And I'm certain Mark Morales has a lot to
do with the clean lines as well. But Laura
Martin? She deserves a freaking medal for the
color-work on this book. It is completely to die
for. The colors pop off the page. Everyone seems
to glisten like the four-color heroes they are.
It is a miracle. This is a very well put
together event comic. And it didn't have to rely
on the gimmick of bringing back a character who
previously died saving the multiverse to pull it
all together. Take THAT Barry Allen!
