"If
Sonny Corleone had an EZ Pass, he'd still be alive
today."
I had
fun with this issue.
Sure,
I've never been much of a fan of "Sheena" at all,
but the DDP miniseries has been an interesting
hybrid of action, adventure, comedy and fantasy
paired with the same good natured serial atmosphere
that keeps the series light on its feet and never
heavy handed. When you get down to it, it really has
no aspirations to be anything other than a serial
comic that works well, because it keeps Sheena an
always interesting character to watch and root for.

From the writer of "Die Hard," as the comic
boasts, Issue 5 is the last in the series where
Sheena has now learned she's the orphan of
esteemed millionaires and is destined to inherit
the fortune of her great grandfather, who
happens to have founded the company Sheena
constantly battles against, in the book. Sheena
and her cohorts manage to dodge an assassination
attempt, after being captured by hunters, and
she, her nemesis, and her love interest travel
into a hidden society she protects, where we
learn about the legend of Sheena and how
coincidence turned her into a goddess, and her
savior into a shaman. There are some genuinely
fun moments here from Sheena keeping a raft from
falling over a water fall, to her escaping
assassination, while some scenes are genuinely
funny. There's the introduction of her foster
father to the village shaman who is such a bad
magician he scares the poor man off the floor,
and Sheena punching both men to kingdom come in
frustration. One of the absolute highlights of
"Sheena" is, of course, the fantastic art by
Matt Merhoff who always casts a light on Sheena
painting her into an utterly incredible beauty
who could only exist in the comics. From clever
back shots, to demonstrations of her stunning
physique, this woman will make readers swoon and
be proud that a goddess can also be a heroine
with pure depth. The climax leaves Sheena with a
definite resolution in her standing in
civilization, but also doesn't hesitate to leave
some ambiguity, which works in its favor.
What a way to finish
off a fun miniseries. Sheena has never looked
better, and the character has never been cooler.
