SPOOKS: OMEGA TEAM #1
Felix Vasquez Jr.

I mean sure it sold well, but I was not fond of "Spooks" and I'm still not. It was formula, candy coated, pointless, forgettable dribble that presented some interesting ideas but lacked any focus, any depth, and really just ended with a disheartening whisper.

It was all one big set up for the series, and here it is. "Spooks: Omega Team" is the first issue that continues after the painfully predictable "surprise" ending of the mini series, and sadly it's just as yawn inducing.

A secret organization within the government that hunts monsters? Check. Tough talking commandos? Check. A super powered member among the ranks? Check. Military talk and big guns? Check. Me dozing off before page five? Check, check!

I wanted to really like "Spooks" but as a whole it's nothing but a pastiche of genre elements that presents the pretense of originality when it really isn't. And while derivation is never a bad thing if conducted well, "Spooks" is so concerned with action that we never get to truly see underneath the bright colors and goofy monsters to notice that it's just cliche fluff.

From the tough talking foreigner, the flat wise cracks, and the plot progression it's just so utterly limp and forgettable. "So are we popping a six pack of kick ass or what?"? Seriously? Is this Michael Bay fodder or what? Is this dialogue supposed to be taken with a laugh or are we supposed to buy that military people talk like this? Not even "G.I. Joe" gets this corny.

The art from Adam Archer and Jonny Rench is fantastic with humongous splashes that flourish while the creature designs are dazzling, but it only serves to prove my point. Blockbuster movies look wonderful, but are they ever entertainment you remember ten minutes after watching? No. "Spooks: Omega Team" is more razzle dazzle and very little creativity. I'll pass on this series.
