Shot in only one day for
the Dare 2 Direct contest, Lewis Farinella's horror short is one hell of
a spooky ditty that makes the most of the atmosphere and conveys true
terror through common fears most of us experience when living alone. The
film is very rough around the edges, and the director admits to that in
the film's description but most of what is seen is almost perfectly
short. Farinella presents a good talent for digging the knife in to the
story and twisting up until the last two minutes of his short.

The tension
is like the turning of the screws from the beginning as
we're never sure when the Stalker (draped in overalls, a
silver mask and a butcher knife) will appear and how he will
appear to his victims. Farinella doesn't just provide a
straight up slasher though, no, he also dabbles in dreams
sequences and the always favorite cat and mouse chase that
nearly all of the slashers ever made have engaged in, but
all is forgiven when you consider the skill Farinella
displays on a movie that only took one god forsaken day. |

"Stalker"
is very reminiscent of "John Carpenter's Halloween" as the Stalker
is almost a double of Michael Meyers except with a sleeker aesthetic
and a mask that really makes the film so memorable in the end. I'd
love to see "Stalker" in feature length form with the Stalker
re-appearing to test our characters and the audience if he's just a
figment of main character Tina's imagination or an honest to
goodness being who unleashes his wrath on anyone who steps between
his female infatuation. While slightly derivative it doesn't affect
the overall production and in the end it whets your appetite leaving
you wanting more.
I want more, I want to
see more, I want to know more and goddammit I want a full length film
that shows off more of what Farinella can dish not only in the horror
genre but the slasher sub-genre to boot!
