SUPERNATURAL: THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON (DVD)

As far as a show can go in only four seasons, "Supernatural" has proven it has surefire staying power and can prove to be one television's biggest players if given the chance to do so. "Season Four" is one that kicks the tension and sibling angst a few notches and pumps in sheer dripping tension and suspense by following an arc that's heavy in grandeur and the suspicion that this may have been its series ender. Why else introduce an all powerful series of heaven's angels, demon's blood, and a battle for mankind that's in the hands of Sam and Dean? Last season Dean was in the throws of the hounds of hell who came to retrieve their prey and drag him down in to the bowels of the underworld. And yet even in all his comeuppance and almost endless reign of torture he is forced to endure, he suddenly finds himself at the foot of his grave completely free of all hellfire and suffering. How did he break free from the shackles of endless torment?
And why has Sam begun fiddling with the dark side? Season Four works around the epic premise that all the brothers have feared is coming to pass and must come to grips with the fact that they're involved in a plot that could unleash the most evil entity ever conceived on mankind, this improves the already stoic storylines with an adrenaline rush that improves the more Season Four's storyline progresses.

From a comic writer who can see the future, to apocalyptic appearances by angels of heaven, no season has beaten the fourth and it's not likely future seasons will manage it. The show's biggest achievement is its capability in handing in fresh stories that exercise the performances by Padalecki and Ackles who seem to improve the longer the show runs and as far as genre television goes it's still one of the best around.

As for the DVD, "The Mythologies of Supernatural: From Heaven to Hell" is an immaculate and detailed look at the myths of theism and the philosophy of angels, archangels, and demons, three of the elements that proved to be stunning material for the series. At almost two hours long, this feature is staggering in its depth. Also featured is creator commentary on three episodes and one for the finale "Lucifer Rising" (commentary by creator Eric Kripke). There's also a hilarious gag reel for the fans that takes great pride in showing what goof offs Ackles and Padalecki are on set and it's a blast.

The show continues to prevail because it hasn't lost focus on what its intention is toward genre television and offering something of texture and originality. In theory the premise is creaky but its creators just continue to top themselves every year the show runs. You have to love it!
