TOM AND JERRY: SPOTLIGHT COLLECTION, VOLUME 3

Hey, here’s a good one, whilst opening my copy of the Spotlight Collection for Tom and Jerry, I was amped to see the “best” of the Tom and Jerry series, and while exploring the packaging, there was a warning that this should not be shown to children. It’s strictly for adult collectors, it warns. So, it’s currently playing on the Cartoon Network, I grew up with this series without hardly killing people, and now we’re told that this shouldn’t be shown to children? I’m confused. It’s bad enough some scenes were cut from certain episodes, and the voice of the maid character was dubbed to make her sound more refined, but now you’re being told that you just shouldn’t show this to children. Why? Because of the non-PC depiction of minorities here. But hey, if you want to be a responsible parent, be sure to explain to your children not to repeat what they see and why these themes are presented, and you’re golden. But that doesn’t stop the collector’s who will be royally shafted to discover some great cartoons not included thanks to the Warner Bros. fearing the racial context may not gel well for viewers even though it’s marketed to a mature audience.

If you want uncut and completely raw Tom and Jerry cartoons, get the VHS compilations once available in the past, because this Spotlight Collection does not have it all. In “Royal Cat Nap,” the scene of Tom getting the guillotine is edited out, as are a few scenes. Why warn us of the offensive nature when you’ve already edited out some content? Why pretend we have a choice when you’re not giving us any options? America, the beautiful.

In spite of it all, these are just hilarious to watch with children. Sure, adults love to collect these compilations, but get it for the children. Tom and Jerry is as fun as Looney Tunes, and then some. Rant aside, this is a great package for the “collectors” who want to show their children what comedy is, and Volume 3 features fifty five of the funniest Tom and Jerry animated shorts that you could hope to see on DVD. With a full screen and wonderfully crisp transfer. You get shorts from folks like Tex Avery and Hannah Barbera and it’s a nice little DVD set for people anxious to revisit the cat and mouse in their ever lasting war of the species. Though suggested only for adults, it’s still an open medium for the children, because even though this and Looney Tunes were actually intended for adults, it’s still great fodder for kids in doses.

It’s still great entertainment for everyone even in spite of being trimmed down to be PC, and “sanitized” for the easily offended. The DVD is filled with almost three hours of some of the best Tom and Jerry shorts of all time, and I highly suggest it.
