TOM & JERRY: DELUXE ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION (DVD)

In spite of Warner Bros. eliciting a warning to all audiences about the shorts here being products of their time and not reflective of their own personal views on race, there is no chance we're ever going to see "Casanova Cat" or "Mouse Cleaning" on DVD ever, which is a damn shame considering they're some of the best shorts ever created. As for "Tom and Jerry: Deluxe Collection," it's really just a pastiche of episodes from the superior Spotlight Collections included in a dapper box for the casual consumer. When all is said and done you can find these with better and much funnier shorts, so there's not a lot here that can be enjoyed too much as the earlier portion of the first DVD focuses on the less funnier "Tom & Jerry" episodes where Tom and Jerry were less violent and much cutesier to watch go to war. There is however no shortage of racial stereotypes as Mammy the maid makes a few appearances warning Tom about his 'breakances' and how he could get kicked out from 'massah.' Clearly this is an element that could easily be explained to kids. I sat through these shorts and never actually considered the racial stereotypes at hand until they were pointed out to me much later on in life.

There are some good shorts here to be enjoyed that you can appreciate for their entertainment and not particularly their laughs. "Midnight Snack" is not a funny episode, but it really is fun to watch, especially since it bears considerable nostalgia. This isn't really a perfect edition since we get Jerry dancing with Gene Kelly, and the pair doing synchronized swimming with Esther Williams, both of which are adorable little memories, but serve little function beyond that.

Then it dives in to the Chuck Jones shorts which, sadly, are terrible. Jones was an amazing artist who created some of the best Looney Tunes episodes in history, but his tackling of Tom and Jerry--while it should have been an obvious pairing--were anything but the toons we remember laughing to.  Poorly drawn, horribly voiced, and featuring confusingly safe and inoffensive gags, his stint on the franchise is an embarrassment for the master. Along with Jones' toons, there are of course the shorts from the pretty above average "Tom and Jerry Kids Show," which was quite entertaining to sit through as a kid and still good now, and of course the usual bland modern depictions of the duo that take great pains in being as sanitary and wholesome as possible. For people looking for a definitive collection, look elsewhere, this is merely a compilation put together for the average consumer looking for mediocre installments of the toons here and there.

As an animation buff it's a nice little set to keep for viewing every now and then, but if you're someone looking for rare and hilarious shorts from the cat and mouse rivals, you should do your research and look elsewhere for your hysterics.
