TORTURE PORN

Gasp! What did he say? He named his movie “Torture Porn”? What an uncool asshole! It’s not called Torture Porn, it’s called horror! Torture’s always been around! How dare he! I’m just mimicking the reactions many horror geeks get when their favorite torture horror films are brandished with the title “Torture Porn.” They act as if you kicked their moms and fed them a “soggy waffle,” and you have to give it to Patrick Rea for having the balls to not only call the movie by the sub-genre’s tag, but for outright satirizing the sheer idiocy that is the torture porn genre. Yeah, I said it. It’s torture porn. A young man sits strapped down into a chair with a ball gag in his mouth. A single light bulb, a dimly lit room, and the obligatory phallic references, it’s all here and Rea simply doesn’t miss a beat here. A man in a smock, a mask, and surgeons hat steps in to a room and prepares to do his worst.

Rea uses this opportunity to fool us into thinking that he’s created a ten minute movie in the vein of “Saw,” when really he only prepares for shocking laughter where our villain has an enormous amount of tools at his disposal including a Barry Manilow record, and the young man is making his job hard. As the torture begins, the man finds he’s having difficulty enjoying his work. How do you make torture porn even less boring?

Well, Rea finds a way as the victim being tortured keeps growing his limbs back, making the act tedious, monotonous, and defeating the purpose of this man’s enjoyment. It’s the ultimate irritation! Even more so, if he doesn’t kill the kid, he’ll be punished by the organization. “Torture Porn” is just the skewering Eli Roth and all the other Torture Porn enthusiasts need. Rea outright cleverly spoofs “Hostel” more than anything and satirizes the inherent stupidity to the concept all the while revealing some possible facets that are surprisingly funny, including a torture help hotline with its own slogan, and that possibility that perhaps humans aren’t the only sick animals in our reality. Rea’s gags are original, hysterical, and much better than the supposed spoof movies like “Epic Movie” in theaters trying to force comedy on us, and he doesn’t pad his movie into a longer running time than he needs to. He strips the fad down and provides us with a well directed and funny jab at the torture porn that’s much deserved and a long time coming.

This is the first time in a while that I've enjoyed something with the tag of torture porn. Patrick Rea creates a hysterical and witty short mutilation of one of most obnoxious fads in modern horror.
