Let's start
with the most obvious best part of this movie. Jeff Bridges.
Now that that is out of the way, my love for Jeff Bridges extends
throughout his entire career. I can see why people are fond of Tron, but
I see a definite cheese factor having seen it now. I wasn't alive when
it came out the first time, so it never really held a special place in
my heart. But the Bridges clan does. So that works for me. Works very
well. I've seen damn near every one of Jeff's films that have come out
ever, a ton of Beau's, and most of Lloyd's. I love the Bridges family.
But anyway: movie review. Tron is one of the few movies I've seen in 3D
this year. I hate the idea of 3D films but since everything I heard said
you have to see this in 3D, I obliged. IMAX 3D also. And it was
spectacular. The action scenes were glorious. Seeing the lightcycle
battles and the fight scenes with the holo-disks were awesome.

Just everything about the pop
and beauty of those scenes is ridiculous. In a great way. If
this director isn't handed some huge property after this
one, then people are stupid. He has it in him to be one of
the biggest directors ever, and I'll talk about that later
in my Raging article. Jeff Bridges playing hero and villain
works so well in this film that it's hard to talk about
anything else. |

Bruce Boxleitner is great in his role. And
the surprises in the film are wonderful. Seeing Daft Punk performing
their own music in the club scene was awesome. If you look at that scene
for what it is, it was equal parts kick-ass music, kick-ass fighting,
and then a really demonic and horrifying turn as Clu all within one
scene. That's how you make a movie and that was just sheer perfection.
There's one other off-beat cameo that came out of nowhere and made me
very happy. Uncredited cameo even. If you spot the actor, you win a
No-prize. But it was awesome to see one of my favorite current actors in
a small scene in the film. He was in one of the biggest movies of the
year that came out in the summer. That's all of a hint I'll give you.
And he's not a blockbuster name actor, but a very solid character actor.
The worst
part of the movie was Clu's face. Pure and simple. I love two Jeff
Bridges in a film but I couldn't stand how bad he looked. They
needed to just do what they did in X-Men 3 (NOT WOLVERINE) and just
de-age him for the role. I mean, it makes sense in the world of the
film because he's a program so you can stand him looking a little
odd when he's Clu. But when they showed younger Flynn it didn't work
because he looked like Animatrix Neo. It wasn't great. It wasn't
great at all. Beyond the bad Clu-face, the other bad things about
this movie were just that a lot of people in the film didn't have a
lot to do. Olivia Wilde looked very attractive in this film and
needs that haircut for the rest of her career, but she didn't get
much to do. At all. Bruce Boxleitner was all but wasted (the promise
of a TV series forthcoming probably helps). Michael Sheen was all
but worthless and didn't get much to do unfortunately. And very few
black people in the Tron world made me think that maybe Clu was a
racist and wiped entire races of people out. But I'm not sure if I'm
supposed to think that after the end of the movie. I'm probably
thinking about it too much.
Talk about a great movie. Light on plot, heavy on action and special
effects, and with some solid acting in between gives you a great
surprise of a movie. Go in and just expect something fun and exciting
and you might love this movie. Go in expecting Shakespeare and best
acting awards and you might be pissed off. But if you go in for that,
you're going to the wrong movie anyway. And Tron wouldn't want you to
love it.
