This movie has one thing going for it: the fighting. It's the whole
centerpiece of the film itself. All the fighters are the real deal, many
of the injuries are real and the fights are brutal. All the actors who
portray the fighters are professionals who are usually doing stuff the
big stars can't in all those action films many love so much. If
anything, I must give the film props for the fights alone.
Where should I begin? This is a movie full of promise and potential,
that ultimately never delivers even a taste of what you hope for. The
characters barely interact, the back stories for each seem so cliché and
tacked on and the story itself is paper-thin. I sat through the whole
thing wondering if I was supposed to be really feeling emotion in
certain scenes, because it was obvious they were trying for that. The
director tries to give the film a "reality show" appearance with
security camera shots, but it just comes off as lame. The fighters
essentially lack any personality at all, which is sad considering a few
of them seemed interesting.

The character who stood out the most was "The Delinquent", who
befriends another of the fighters only to have to fight him
later on. I have to say, that was likely the only scene that
made me care about any of it. As far as plot, that's
nonexistent. It's just a bunch of people fighting for their
own reasons, period. We learn nothing of the bastard running
the competition (who seriously annoyed me immensely, for
some reason) and the entire thing flashes by so quickly that
you feel like you've been gypped. |

By the time the final match came around, I was completely indifferent to
any of it, tempted to shut it off right then. Compared to a few earlier
matches, it was quite weak. The fighters are all basic clichés with
little to no creativity, which makes me wonder how this even made it to
theaters.
There were some decent fight scenes early on, but not enough to save it.
Ultimately a complete let down from beginning to end. Go watch The
Kumite instead, as it's much better than this.
