WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

This movie moved me in so many ways that it was hard to watch it in a theater with my friends. It was touching. It was thrilling. It was lovely. And it was amazing. The movie was just a modern work of art.

I’ve wanted to write this review for awhile and just haven’t been able to find the ability to put it to words. I really haven’t. I wanted to wait and get the right words out there and I think it’s time.

Since watching the movie opening weekend on the IMAX, I’ve read the Maurice Sendak book about 10 times and I’m currently reading the making of book Heads On and We Shoot. It’s a work of art, just like the book by Sendak. And that’s what people seemed to have missed when they complained about this movie. When they critiqued it, they missed the point.

This is for your inner child.

This is for the part of you that misses being able to spend an entire summer not wearing shoes or go an entire winter and spend all of your time outside. It’s lovely. It’s amazing. It made me feel like a kid.

And it had everything to do with the wonder and pure beauty that is the Henson-created costumes of the Wild Things. Sheer beauty and sheer insanity seem to have put this movie in theaters, and it is different from the 200 word book and that’s what makes this so much more exhilarating of a film.

Max and the Wild Things are fully realized film characters, fully engulfed in this world around them and just simply awesome. I don’t have all the right words for this review, but I can only say that this movie made me feel like a kid. It made me miss playing with action figures and it made me want to look inside and write more.

And that’s what I’m doing.

If it’s still playing, go see it. If not, see it when it comes out on video. If you miss being a kid or having your imagination be your best friend or have ever lived a large portion of your life with an imagination that just took everything in your life and made it so much more vibrant, this is a movie for you. Max and the Wild Things will make you laugh, cry, and will just be a part of your heart for the rest of your life.
