early review, lack of coherence ahead)

"You're all going to die
down here!"
What can I say about this film except
it's about damn time! It's been ten years since a decent zombie movie
has been released in the theatres and this one doesn't disappoint. We
have zombies galore, gun-toting soldiers, and plenty of horror to eat up
with a spoon. First off, the horror is all in the right places, watching
this walking cadavers pounce out at someone unexpectedly and chomp down
on the soldiers is what I've been waiting for for years. Granted, I am
terrified, I repeat, terrified of zombie movies, I was willing to make
an exception for this one. Director Paul Anderson does an excellent job of taking over for
George Romero who was released
from this project before filming.
He mixes the right dosages of suspense,
science fiction, action, and complete horror carnage giving birth to an
excellent horror movie hybrid. The zombies are still scary as hell. It's been a
long time since I've seen so much zombies gang up on so many people.
Brings a tear to my eye. The computer graphics are excellent as we see the
Licker, a giant wall-crawling beast with a bullwhip tongue crawling in the
darkness throughout the flick. Milla Jovovich is excellent as the leading lady
who gives off that great movie heroine vibe. Warning, this is not suggested for
little kids or the weak of heart. All around this is a fun and terrifying romp
that will have you clenching onto someone you love. I salute you, Mr. Anderson.
The problem with this film is evident. It's too
clean. At one point we see an entire group of zombies grab a guy and bring him
into a crowd chomping on him. In the next scene we see his body with a couple of
scratches on his face. Another point which ruined this flick is that IT'S-TOO-LOUD!! Everything in this entire movie makes a sound. Especially when something
opens. At one point a wooden drawer is opened and it makes the sound of a
metallic door. I feel they exaggerated that aspect. The acting is pretty bad in
this movie, especially by Michelle Rodriguez who hams it up big time as the
hotshot young soldier. Though the nasty acting and some flaws, the score isn't
affected much.
This is not particularly accurate to the original game, and that's one
of the many flaws present, but it's one of Paul Anderson's more
entertaining films, if you want your hum drum horror zombie fare sans
the blood and gore. How much staying power this has, we can't really
know, but it's a fun film either way.
