HACK/SLASH #1

"Hack/Slash" is back! Kind of! With fame there's always a trade off and now with this new four part entry in to the lore (why mini-series when we had a series going before?), we have a new storyline, references to the past trade paperbacks and... Cat Curio. If you don't know who Cat Curio (get it? Like Curiosity killed the cat!) is, imagine Harriet the Spy, except with more resources, much older, and ten times more annoying than Michelle Trachtenberg can manage to be. That said, the series is back in its prime with all of the original supporting characters inserted back for fans, as well as references to the old storylines. We have the Nef dog back as well as Cassie's friends, and Vlad is back to his old tricks again, indulging in man talk with the fellas and trying to figure out what's wrong with Cassie. Around the town of Eminence, teens are being yanked from Lover's Lane and turned in to psychotic acid freak zombies that are giving Vlad and Cassic a run for their money.

Meanwhile Vlad and co. are trying to figure out why Cassie has closed herself off and become a workaholic. There is many a reference made to Georgia, Cassie's stripper lover from the previous series run that is now affecting Cassie and the way she hunts. Whether she's a lesbian or just bisexual is still up the air, but the series intimates that yes, Cassie is very much homosexual. But that doesn't mean she's any less the bad ass as Cassie Hack, the woman who is intent on finding the source of these acid freak zombies who are powered on ungodly speed and strength and can burn skin with their touch. They're also dumbfounded as to why their heads explode upon impact when you smash a bat or cleaver in to them.

This new menace is surely disturbing, especially with the introduction of the presumably recurring villain the black flame, a brotherhood of secret monsters and slashers all of whom are in eminence for reasons yet unknown. One of the main baddies of the secret cult is Pumpkin face, a masked killer and assassin who has a history with Cat Curio (get it? Like Curiosity killed the cat!) stabbing her in the heart and putting her in to a nearly decade long coma. Now that she's in town she's investigating Pumpkin face, and is sure to cross paths with Cassie and her team. Will she become a recurring character? God, I hope not. Her inner monologues to her recorder wreak of lazy and needless exposition.

How can we give her a back story without slowing the pace? Well easily have her speak in to a voice recorder and explain her back story to the blank tape like it's her first time recording. Especially considering she makes a note of explaining she's been investigating these supernatural occurrences for years. Whether friend or foe, I hope Cat Curio (get it? Like Curiosity killed the cat!) contributes something to this new series beyond annoying the ever loving piss out of me and getting herself in to trouble. Cassie is still the most interesting character of the bunch and I hope we get to see more of her inner turmoil and struggles to define her sexuality in the face of a lost lover of the same sex. I'm glad the series is back to form. Here's hoping Image treats it right.
