THE SKY IS FALLING

I jumped into this movie inadvertently while searching for something to watch on Television. As always, there was nothing on cable, and I was surfing through. Then I began to watch this. Dedee Pfeiffer stars as a young girl in her late twenties who is an aspiring writer. Her character, Emily, wrote a novel called "One Final Day", a book about an eighty year old woman's last day on earth. That's when her life goes from perfect to terrible. First, her book gets rejected by every publisher in the country, then her boyfriend dumps her, then she can't seem to find a job.
I found this movie to be quite good for an independent flick. Or was it? I'm not sure. The story is very cute without ever getting really depressing. True, throughout the entire movie she contemplates constantly on committing suicide with often humorous and neurotic scenarios about how she would look dead, only to be brought back to Earth by her only form of moral supports, her mother played very well played by Teri Garr, and her dog Sammy, who is more like her sidekick rather than her pet. In fact, he was one of the many high points of the film. Dedee Pfeifer is very likeable in this film, she provides a great onscreen presence. She gives us her gruff tough exterior while exposing her vulnerable sides. She is also very good-looking. By the end of the film I wanted to marry her. The entire plot is very original and unorthodox, it somewhat resembles a romantic comedy yet doesn't turn out that way. Now, I was never one to give away an ending as you can tell. You have to keep 'em wanting more. So, I won't tell you whether or not she commits suicide or lives, and I won't tell you whether there's a happy ending or sad ending to this. You'll just have to watch now, won't you?

Now, even though this movie is good, there are also some faults to it. First, Dedee Pfeiffer can display amateurish tendencies in certain moments of the film. For me, it kind of threw the movie to a fault and I was never able to get over it. Call me petty, but I prefer to think of it as me being careful. I also would have like to see the relationship between Emily and the old man Mr. Finch build up more. I would've like to see them bond more, I wanted more. But all I got was less.

Nevertheless, the film is cute, and deep with a good performance by Dedee Pfeiffer.
