SPACE BOY

This might be one of the best looking shorts I have ever seen. I say this having seen some really good ones like 'Broken', but this one is top notch. It is a visual journey and it is great to watch. I was mesmerized, in awe, and taking in all the great shots that Ransom Riggs made. The film can be seen in HD at certain festivals that allow it. I would highly recommend you check it out and view it as it should be viewed.

The acting is also pretty good in this movie, which is refreshing. Considering most of the crew is teens. A lot of teens can come off as trying too hard, fake, or awkward. The lead actor Arman Zajic, who had a small role in 'Jarhead' is perfectly cast as this shy kid who you never know what is going on with him. Is he really from outer space? Is he just weird? Just what is this kids deal? He really keeps you guessing the whole way through.

Michelle Page is also strong as the punk rock girlfriend of his brother. She is human and compassionate whereas everyone else is stereotypical.

The story. It is never fully explained and ends in lackluster and underwhelming fashion. I don't think the story is fully used for all it can be. I would have liked more character development on the background of all of this. I know it is a short film, but some understanding of why the characters are the way they are would be useful. We are kinda tossed in there without some knowledge of who, what, where, and why. If this cinematography had a decent story to it, it would have been off the charts.

I have noticed lots of short film makers not paying enough attention to the narrative part of their film. A lot of them look really good, but lack that extra punch due to the story. You can only look at something for so long, before you want something to engage your mind the rest of the way. I think they spend so much time on the film itself and how to shoot scenes, they forget the most important part, which is the story. It moves along everything we see on screen.

The great looking film suffers from zero to no plot. It is worth checking out to enjoy all the great scenery.
