How much relevance do
comedians still have in America? A lot. But how much new
anecdotes and commentary do they have to share for us?
Still the same old junk, judging by this new series.
Granted, "Stand up or Shut up" is well intentioned, and
really anxious to shed some light on political currents
as connecting with comedians, but by the episode I
watched, there's really nothing new they can tell us
about this profession or the comedian's relevance
towards the public. Liberal comedians bash Bush,
Conservative and Republican comedians bash Liberals.
That's basically all there is to the episode I watched.
For a little under twenty minutes, we jump back and
forth through many different comedians whom explain
their own skits, their routines, and what they think of
the current state of America. There's the usual jab on
homophobes, the jabs on Bush's stupidity, the fact that
even his supporters admit he's not that bright, and so
on. I was looking for something even remotely fresh and
original in terms of the documentary addressing how our
civil rights are being depleted while comedians really
speak their minds, but basically it's just a parade for
these comedians to give their routines in brief clips
while never exploring anything beyond them. No one
really shares anything new, they just talk about the
same old subjects we've thought of since Bush was
elected to office. "If I bashed Bush in one of these Red
states, I wouldn't make it out alive!" Well, yeah,
that's what everyone's thought of since Bush was
re-elected. Just like Ali G nearly was killed pretending
to be a homosexual in a hillbilly state. What else is
new?
