STUART LITTLE 2

In the sequel to the box - office hit, we once again meet Stuart Little (voiced by Michael J. Fox  Spin City, Back to the Future) who has adapted to his home life but feels small. He wants desperately to become a normal kid by making friends and playing soccer but his protective mother Mrs. Little (Geena Davis  A league of their own, Thelma & Louise) won't let him. He then stumbles upon a small yellow bird named Margalo (Voiced by Melanie Griffith  Milk Money) who is injured and seeking refuge from an evil falcon named-- falcon (Voiced by James Woods  Vampires, Guliani) who wants her for his evil plans. She's kidnapped and now Stuart is on a mission to save her from the evil bird, but will soon discover something about her and himself.
The animation is a lot better than the original sporting some truly cool fur effects on the part of Little. What I really enjoyed though was the animation to the characters of Falcon and Margalo. At times Falcon truly resembles a real life falcon which was amazing. James Woods voices the bad tempered schemer with great effects enabling himself to truly sound threatening but not enough to scare the young ones. The bird Margalo is a cutie pie and I often enjoyed the scene between Stuart and her as they bond and become best friends. The character of Fluffy played by Nathan Lane is possibly the funniest one in the entire movie providing the hysterical comic relief as he gets the butt of many accidents and pitfalls often cowering away in fright. Geena Davis was fun to look at and gives a good performance as Mrs. Little who is basically very overprotective of Stuart.

I was not a fan of the original movie which received a lot of attention and became a big hit. The problem with both these films are that it's hard to take anything even remotely seriously. The character of Stuart is basically a one-dimensional one with very superficial emotions. I found it hard to even feel for his situations of feeling helpless and such because I simply wasn't interested. To bring some leverage to the movie the filmmakers introduce Margalo who befriends Stuart but she's hardly interesting at all. The story twist within the movie involving Margalo is predictable and basically slows down the whole purpose of the story which is for Stuart to come of age. I wanted to see Stuart cope more with his everyday life and go out on a journey not of the nature within this movie. Though all logic disappears in kids movies, I found it perplexing that a talking mouse dressed in clothing would drive a small car through a busy city street and not get stepped on or even marveled at by anyone. The story is pretty lame and has zero depth lacking family values, and once Stuart goes on his journey it basically alienates the kid population of the audience from truly being able to relate to his feelings and situation. Aside from that the movie is very never truly focusing on or emphasizing the situation of the Stuart character yet simply speeds into the journey to save Margalo. The supporting characters are simply used as plot devices and basically slow the story down in a sub-par plot.

A fluffy, mindless but ultimately cute sequel to a lame original that failed to register with me. I like kids movies but this isn't the best of them.
