THE GRUDGE (2004)

This film has a few genuine scare moments that make you leap from your
seat. It’s mainly accomplished through quick camerawork and scary
sounds, but it’s there, and they deserve credit for that. That’s what
saves this movie from being a total loss.
Well, there’s the fact that the translation of this movie doesn’t
translate. It’s like a hundred other movies I’ve seen, and it’s also
dreadfully repetitive. We see person after person go into the haunted
house and get hurt, killed, crazed, or otherwise. Stephen King knows how
to do that, and even he’s tired out that theme.
The horror involved is, as well, just
hilarious. When you see something that scares you, it’s supposed to
chill you. Like the Creeper in Jeepers Creepers 2. You see those eyes,
and you don’t want to be watching the movie any more, you’re so scared.
This movie has little children who meow and burp. I kid you not. And
when they attack, you’re just wondering why the character being attacked
doesn’t just hit them with a stick or something.
There’s also irrational connections
between deaths, a number of unexplained things, and just generally too
much repetition.
Not that great. I heard good things about this movie, but I was dubious
because The Ring didn’t translate well for me, and I’m not fond of Sarah
Michelle Gellar. I don’t think she can act very well in films, and
there’s no connection with her character here, really.
Bottom line, who’s afraid of a kid
who burps you to death?
