After watching “The Calm,” one thought has
lingered over my head for the last hour or so. Was this really made on
only three hundred dollars? Seriously? Perhaps it’s just a testament to
Bischoff’s skill, or maybe just a bold faced lie, but “The Calm” is
really so well made, it looks to have been made in the area of a grand
more than three hundred bucks only. “The Calm” is a fan film and one
that fuses two franchises together in a little under a half hour, and
its budget is still something I’m debating with myself even at this
moment and time. A young man who lives alone and still mourns the death
of his wife, finds himself being hunted by a Predator hunter who is
intent on stalking and killing him.

But when the Terminator crashes the scene
interrupting the hunter’s mission, the hunter’s job becomes
much tougher. Bischoff’s film in general, it’s less a
narrative, and more one that bases its sleek effects and
costumes as a centerpiece. There’s not a single piece of
dialogue in this short film, and yet that’s the aspect that
helped it win me over pure and simple. |

Sure, it’s a fan film, but probably one of
the best fan films I’ve seen in years, due to Bischoff’s ambitious
attempts to fill in a hole in the entire “Terminator” timeline.
Bischoff caps the entire film with a great
surprise ending that worked ten times better than “Terminator 3,” and I
reveled in the apparent larger story looming within its short time
frame. The dread, mixed with the rather great special effects (The
Terminator looks almost exactly like Schwarzenegger!), makes “The Calm”
a fan boy’s dream, the battle of the Terminator and the predator for one
primary objective. And an objective you’ll have to discover for
yourself.
Though I'm still questioning the claim that this was all made on three
hundred dollars even, "The Calm" is an utterly excellent fan film
starring the science fiction stalkers we know and love, with a dynamic
plot, and a surprise ending that is worthy of being an extra on the
DVD's for "The Predator," and "The Terminator."
