THE TURNING POINT

What won me over about “The Turning Point” is not that it’s a movie, but it’s obviously a gift from two parents to their child. I mean sure, anyone can make a movie about pregnancy, but “The Turning Point” is an exceptional documentary about two people really making a baby. They want a child, they look like great parents, and the documentary just makes you feel good about life. I’m a realist, I’m not a fan of movies that inspire ridiculous feelings of happiness, because life isn’t happy. But sometimes life can have moments of pure joy, and having a baby can be pure joy.

And you can only imagine this film being played for director Williams’ child over and over, and it will know the experience of its own birth, and you just have to admire this. “The Turning Point” chronicles the pregnancy and the hardships accompanying it through the eyes of Ross Williams and his wife Kristen, both of whom happen to be hardcore movie buffs. Williams’ film is just a work of love, and I just couldn’t look away.

I’m not sold usually on documentaries about child birth, but something about “The Turning Point” made it impossible to hate. Possibly because of Ross’ sheer relatable moments when he realizes he’s going to be a father, may not want to be one, and then all out realizes he’s in love with the child, while his wife is just all around fun to watch. She’s hilarious to listen to, takes the pregnancy with stride, and just wants the child to come already. Told through assorted home videos, wonderful editing, and rather hilarious skits in which Williams makes great humor of the situation, “The Turning Point” brings the audience in at eye level, and perfectly conveys the experience of becoming a parent. Williams explores the wonders of life without ever resorting to preachy messages of religion, and he is inspirational without every being hokey. It’s simply a filmmaker capturing a true period in his life on film. And I just loved it. More power to you, Ross!

Williams has a surefire crowd pleaser on his hands, one that really evokes really deep emotions of life and love, and it's a winner. "The Turning Point" is a beautifully done slice of life, and I enjoyed it to pieces.
