The Academy Museum Celebrates Silent Cinema This Summer

As a nod to Turner Classic Movies (TCM)’s “Silent Sunday Nights,” hosted by Academy Museum Director and President Jacqueline Stewart, the museum is launching a series of silent film screenings this summer. Historian David Pierce has concluded that only 26% of American silent features survive in complete form.

Both TCM and the Academy Museum are dedicated to showcasing the films of this important period in filmmaking history as part of our cultural heritage. Taking place on Sundays at 2pm, Silent Sundays will showcase iconic movies from the silent era as well as forgotten gems and international classics.

Among just some of the films being screened are Earth (Zemlya), the ever first screening of the film outside of Europe with a new soundtrack for the film created by Luke Corradine by order of the UFACE association, Flesh and the Devil with Live musical accompaniment by Michael Mortilla, and the 100th Anniversary screening of the Harold Lloyd masterpiece Safety Last!

Tickets On Sale Now For “MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO” 35th Anniversary Screenings

Tickets are on sale now for the celebratory 35th anniversary screenings of renowned director Hayao Miyazaki’s cherished feature My Neighbor Totoro, kicking off Studio Ghibli Fest 2023. GKIDS, celebrating its 15^th anniversary as producer and distributor of multiple Academy Award^®-nominated animated features, and Fathom Events, are proud to continue their collaboration for Studio Ghibli Fest 2023, and deliver a slate highlighting all ten of Hayao Miyazaki’s iconic animated films with Studio Ghibli, as well as the first-ever North American screenings of SPIRITED AWAY: Live On Stage.

The film will be shown in both original Japanese and English dubbed versions. In addition to the full feature, audiences will get to view exclusive selections from the documentary series 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki.

Leather Archives & Museum Announces New Film Series “Fetish Film Forum” March-December 2023

The Leather Archives & Museum is thrilled to announce Fetish Film Forum, a new monthly screening series about non-normative sex, relationships, and art. These ten erotic films spanning nine countries and six decades are visceral explorations of fetish, kink, leather, and BDSM, kicking off in March with the whimsical Sundance winner Secretary (2002) and concluding with nunsploitation stunner Cristiana: Devil Nun (1972) in December.

Screenings are March-December, 2023, held the 3^rd Saturday of the month at 7pm at the Leather Archives & Museum (6418 N Greenview Ave, Chicago, IL), and post-screening discussions are included with all screenings. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the LA&M’s website and cost $10 per screening, or $8 for LA&M Members with an active membership. A Season Pass to see all ten films costs $80 for General Public, or $70 for LA&M Members. General Admission tickets include a 30-day membership to the LA&M.

Brilliant editing that tells us everything and yet nothing? Check.
Another spooky trailer from Jordan Peele? Check.

That Jordan Peele sure is a wicked puppet master, and with “Nope” he grabs our attention while giving us literally nothing about “Nope” except the basics. Is it an alien invasion? Aliens weaponizing the weather? Are these interstellar colonizers? It’s going to be a long wait to July 7th.
