From Mill Creek Entertainment, season three includes some of the best episodes of the series, it’s a time where the series was beginning to finds its footing not only on television but in its premise focusing on a genuine working class family trying to get by day by day. Some of my favorite episodes are in season three where the writers flex not only their ability to cast perfect characters that can mix it with the original cast, but their ability to cast brilliant actors in the roles as the supporting cast.

Who can forget Estelle Parson’s as Roseanne and Jackie’s mother Bev who makes an appearance sans her husband in the episode “Confessions” where we learn more about the fractured relationship between Roseanne, Jackie, and their mother. The episode’s best riffing is during the moments where the trio of actresses trade giggles and deadpan delivery of sharp one liners. And of course there’s the appearance Ned Beatty as Dan’s dad who announces his marriage to Roseanne’s friend Crystal which also provides insight in to the relationship between Dan and his dad, which allows us to see how far Dan will go to be happy in their relationship unless it means his dad experiencing true happiness.

And finally there’s the great Shelly Winter’s who makes her first appearance as Roseanne’s eccentric grandmother Nana Mary, an independent and loud mouthed woman who holds her own against the original cast of the series beautifully. Nana Mary will make more appearances later on and she’s an excellent addition to the overall cast of supporting characters. Season Three would reflect the beginning of two important storylines: one involving Dan’s attempts to open up his first business which would affect the family in a big way, and the second involving the introduction of Glenn Quinn as Becky’s rebellious boyfriend Mark who would go on to become a thorn in Dan and Roseanne’s side later in the season. “Season Three” is a nice collection of banner episodes of the series and a signal of darker times to come in season three and I love it.

Featured in the DVD’s extras are “The Sister that Never Leaves” about aunt Jackie, “I was a Teenaged Becky” about the series confronting Becky’s adolescence, and “The Best of Season Three.”

It’s no secret that “Roseanne” is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time, and it’s a plus to finally have all twenty five episodes of season three on DVD.
