Just put them in to space? Josie and the Pussycats went there, and now the gang from Gilligan’s Island. Considered the official sequel, the premise for this series is just as outlandish as the original series. And you have to take it with a grain of salt as well. Logic be damned, rather than build a boat out of the island, the professor builds a space ship. The group manages to get off of the island and find themselves stranded in space! Now they’re on an alien planet coming across all sorts of extra terrestrials while trying to repair their spaceship to get home.

Don’t ask about oxygen or supplies or food, it’s just a cartoon that relies on the silliness of the original series to get you through it. There is absolutely nothing here unless you’re a hardcore fan of “Gilligan’s Island.” Most of the cast returns to voice their respective characters, and it’s mostly just a series reliant on bungling, slapstick, and knuckle brained characters getting in to all sorts of mishaps. Except they’re now on an alien planet and not wreaking havoc on a native island. Filmation’s animated series has aged rather poorly since 1982, with stiff and rigid animation and the same level of variety in their animated characters that we saw with “Scooby Doo.” It’s all clearly a cheap spin off intent on marketing on a lame series, and it’s no wonder it only lasted thirteen episodes total.

Truthfully Josie and the Pussycats work better in the space scenery than the SS Minnow crew, but that doesn’t stop the writers from creating new landscapes, wacky alien side characters, and random foes. If there’s one consolation, you at least have the original cast on board for this one. That’s a small consolation, but it matters for fans. The home release only comes with the original series, and nothing more. You get a Play All Function which is often missing from these sets. Not that I saw all the episodes mind you. For all three of you hardcore “Gilligan’s Island” nuts (still demanding that movie, eh?), this should be a treat. For everyone else, the entertainment value is slim to nil. And I usually have a high tolerance for trashy animated series.

So I guess that’s the answer to any old stale franchise in the old days?
