Which is to say that only hardcore fans of the series will love with “Resurrection ‘F’” has to offer them; everyone else will likely just appreciate the animation. It’s a truncated and very fast paced feature length film and one that I quite enjoyed. While I’ve always been hard on the series over the years, “Resurrection ‘F’” was a slimmed down and very breezy action film that reminded me why I was a fan such a long time ago. It also has a really good sense of humor about itself with folks like Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan settled in their domesticated roles, forced in to combat with a superior foe.

This time around, “Resurrection ‘F’” is set many years after the evil Lord Frieza was obliterated by futuristic warrior Trunks. With Frieza now gone his army lays in ruins and his foes are now settled in to their own lives on Earth. Landing on Earth, Frieza’s army interrupts a gathering of the Dragon Balls and hijacks a wishing session from the great dragon. Their wish? To bring back Frieza. Using their advanced technology, they take Frieza’s body parts and regenerate him to full power. Frieza is now back and better than ever, and is out for revenge against Son Goku, the only man who could match his power levels. But Goku and Vegeta are training with a mystical master, and are oblivious to his arrival.

Now it’s up to Earth’s remaining forces which include Son Gohan, Piccolo, Kuririn, Kame-Sennin, Tenshinhan and Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. But while they’re able to battle Frieza’s army, Frieza is a whole other case altogether. I have to say I really enjoyed the more aerodynamic storytelling for “Resurrection ‘F’” as nothing here feels like padding. It doesn’t have the aesthetic of a glorified cash in, and really provides an interesting albeit slim storyline for the return of Frieza. As with most “Dragon Ball Z” installments, the fight scenes are fantastic with all of our heroes throwing down with Frieza’s army, and even take them on in their own terms. Once Goku and Vegeta are made woefully aware of Frieza’s return the tension ratchets up to eleven. Especially considering that Frieza has a new gold form that makes him even more powerful than anyone can imagine.

Luckily for Goku and Vegeta they can acquire a blue haired form called “Super Saiyan God” which allows them to go toe to toe with Gold Frieza without much of a struggle. My favorite addition to the movie is Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. I’m admittedly not sure if he’s apart of “Dragon Ball Z” canon, but he’s a damn cool superhero and warrior and I wanted to see so much more of him. Thankfully he not only plays a crucial role in Frieza’s defeat, but he also helps the warriors battle his remaining army on Earth, providing an amazing cunning and ability on the battlefield. Akira Toriyama’s “Resurrection ‘F’” is a really entertaining and balls to the wall “Dragon Ball Z” installment which cuts through the exposition and backtracking in favor of a narrative that only goes forward and presses on to great action and exciting battles. I sense fans of the series will really enjoy what the film has to offer the franchise, and I hope to see another feature in the future.

“Dragon Ball Z” is back and it’s about as niche as ever!
