Evan works in such an office where there is very low morale and sales are not going well. To help this situation, his boss Ted hires Max, Evan’s old nemesis. Shortly after this, odd things start happening and eventually Evan believes something is very, very wrong in the office. After the first dead body turns up, he tries to get help from the HR person, his ex-girlfriend who think he must have gone crazy. Eventually, a second incident gets Evan to reach out to his best friend Tim for help. They eventually round up their rag tag three musketeers with Frank, the office security guard who knows more than he lets on. Together, they take on Max and his vampire minions.

The story here is fairly simple and a little predictable as the viewer goes in knowing there will be vampires. The bloodsuckers here do not reinvent the genre. They suck blood, turn or kill people, cannot be in sunlight, explode when killed … What somewhat saves the movie here is the humor and the vampire kills. The association of phone sales people and vampires was an easy one to make, but some of the scenes here are funny and worth checking out. However, do not get mislead by the film being touted as a cross between Office Space and Shaun of the Dead as it is not nearly as funny as either. It is entertaining but most likely could have been more effective with stronger scares and different or more humor.

This is disappointing coming from the group of comedians known as Dr. God. This group is composed of Sean Cowhig (the janitor in the movie), Neil Garguilo (Mike), Brian James O’Connell (the director of the movie), David Park (Dave), and Justin Ware (Andrew). Also credited as a writer is Ryan Mitts, so this means quite a few people had their hands in this story which may not have been a good thing. Too many cooks as the expression goes. Not being very familiar with Dr. God’s work, this viewer had very little bearing as to their usual comedy style. Judging by this movie however, they are no Broken Lizard.

The acting by the guys of Dr. God is good, not out of place in a film like this. The stand out here is Joey Kern as Tim, the lead’s best friend. At first, he plays Tim as a totally bored cube farm employee then as the action ramps up, he brings more effective humor to his scenes than most of the others involved. Also, entertaining to watch is Marshall Givens as the energy drink fuel security agent Frank. His character is fun when paired with Kern’s; he delivers a few laughs here and there of his own but can also be counted on for the assist.

Given that Bloodsucking Bastards is a horror-comedy, there is a good amount of blood involved once the vampires show themselves. Blood is pretty much the only gore here and it is plentiful. It must be said that the blood splatter looks good and the vamps spread a lot of if on their killers when they go. Besides all the blood, there is not much gore to be spoken of, if any.

Bloodsucking Bastards is being marketed as a cross between Office Space and Shaun of the Dead and it may be in terms of being a horror comedy set in an office. However, both those films are highly superior and much funnier. This type of marketing is setting expectations that are very hard to meet and almost always leads to a letdown for viewers. Bloodsucking Bastard is not a bad movie, but it’s not the best horror-comedy either. It’s fun and enjoyable, but not particularly memorable.

Film4 FrightFest 2015 Office work can be soul sucking, it can be deathly boring.
