Following his failed attempt, as he’s working at a grocery store, Rob meets Holly and falls for her. As their love blossoms, Nina comes back to life to mess with their minds and taunt them.

The film was written and directed by Ben Blaine and Chris Blaine who create characters the audience cares about even through the mounting stress and non-sense of the dead coming back to life while they have sex. The characters feel human; their emotions being appropriate to their situation if one can believe that they would not simply run far from each other as soon as Nina shows up.

Nina Forever may be a ghost/undead story but it’s not simply that. Within the crazy story, the blood, and everything else lay themes of death, the afterlife, mourning and letting go. What keeps bringing Nina back? It could easily be because she died traumatically and her soul is clinging to life and what she held dear. However, here it seems to be much more as she is not simply haunting Ron or their old apartment, but also tormenting his new lover and showing up only when they get intimate, making it more about him needing to let go then about her being attached to her past life.

In the titular part of Nina, Fiona O’Shaughnessy bring the creep factor but also a sadness at times while at others she seems to bring more glee to her character’s “haunting” of the new couple. Her role is limited to mainly one room and she manages to build a character that is not only dead but also witty and somewhat endearing. Playing opposite her undead part are Cian Barry as Rob, the grief stricken boyfriend, and Abigail Hardingham as Holly, Rob’s new girlfriend. The two of them have chemistry and show a good range of emotions. Barry gets to have an arc going from suicidal mourner to newly in love to letting go of his past love. Hardingham gets to show that she is falling in love against the hardship and that she cares even through some of the worse possible situations for a new couple. They both bring nuanced performances to their parts making the audience care about them and their relationship.

The horror factor here comes mainly from the story as there is very little gore besides the blood that accompanies Nina’s apparitions. It’s a lot of blood, but there isn’t much to be grossed out about. The film also has a very little violence but has a good amount of nudity, most of it paired with blood which may be considered disturbing by some. The film is more drama than horror even though it’s about an undead girl as it is not meant to be scary and violence is non-existent outside of the car accident. One the drama front, the characters are people one cares about and it builds an interesting, never boring story of love against the odds.

Nina Forever may not be a gory horror film or a violent one, but it’s a horror movie that is definitely worth seeing. It’s an exploration of letting go and how a loved one’s grief can affect those in their life. It’s about how someone’s life and death have further reaching consequences than even they may have thought or hoped for. It’s about moving on, learning to love, and learning to love again while not letting the past hold you back forever. It’s just all wrapped in one bloody bow.

After his girlfriend Nina dies in a car crash, Rob attempts suicide he is so grief stricken.
