The Delusseys\u2019 family life is disturbed after the father falls ill. As the family adapts to this, Fay, the teenage daughter, begins to think she has a stalker hellbent on taking over her life and stealing her place and her identity. As things escalate, others start to think they have seen Fay where she was not and she starts thinking it\u2019s someone who looks just like, her doppelganger, attempting to assume her identity. What Fay doesn\u2019t know yet is that her family hides a secret that could possibly explain what is happening to her.<\/p>\n

Another Me is based on a book of the same title by author Cathy MacPhail and was adapted by writer\/director Isabel Coixet who is used to dealing with family drama, such as with her previous poignant film My Life Without Me. This film is categorized as a thriller but it does have horror elements to it, the last quarter having some creepy scenes and some definite horror parts. However, getting to those scenes feels like it takes forever and a day as the film is a super slow burn.<\/p>\n

This is a character driven piece and their development is interesting, not boring however not a lot happens. There are events here and there that add mystery but as a whole, the story feels like a teenage drama with a predictable twist by the time the film gets to it. This reviewer not having read the book it\u2019s based on, it\u2019s not clear it this came from the book or its adaptation. The story is not particularly boring but it\u2019s not exactly exciting or entertaining either.<\/p>\n

The cast here is led by Sophie Turner as Fay who turns in a strong performance as a teen girl troubled by her father\u2019s health issues, her mother\u2019s secret, and by this stalker. She is present in most of the scenes so her performance is very important and influences the perception of the film. Turner play Fay as a normal but troubled teenager without becoming one who the older audience can\u2019t stand. Supporting her are Rhys Ifans as her father, Claire Forlani as her mother, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as her teacher. All three turning in good performances as the adults in Fay\u2019s life who are supposed to support her while everything is going on. Ifans and Rhys Meyers do shine in their parts.<\/p>\n

As this film is more of a drama\/thriller than flat out horror, the suspense is mild and the gore non-existent. Nonetheless, there is a bit of a scare factor which builds really slowly and steadily. However, it is somewhat for naught as the ending is a bit predictable and not very surprising to those who have seen other films in this vein. During all of this, the film looks very good, it\u2019s grey shades and images fitting the story and its development while also adding to the tone of the story.<\/p>\n

Another Me is a fairly good movie, but a slow burn of a story, the acting saves it from being boring. The performances are strong, the dialogue is good, but the suspense could have been tenser and the build up to the end should have led to a stronger, more powerful ending. As it is right now, the ending only satisfies a little as it is predictable. A more surprising one would have given the film more oomph to good with the quality performances and the good look of the film.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
