It’s one of the greatest tools we have in the arena of the genre, but it’s rarely ever used. And when it is, it’s squandered in a sea of over explanation and tedious exposition. It’s rare we’re ever given horror movies these days that rely on what we don’t see and don’t know.

Director William Prince’s short horror film “Click” is terrifying because he builds an environment and a monster out of our basest fears. There’s isolation, anxiety, and of course, the dark. Nyctophobes will find “Click” especially terrifying because while most director might give us a glimpse, perhaps even a split second view of our villain, Princes opts not to. What is causing this horror? It could likely be the dark. Or something in the dark. Prince sets up a narrative where our characters know just as little as the audience, we’re left scratching our heads and discussing what we have just seen. A group of children decide to play a game of soccer outside an abandoned hospital.

During a game of horseplay between an older boy and a pretty girl, one of the younger playmates kicks the ball from them and it crashes in to the hospital by accident. Displaying courage for the girls, the younger boy and his brother venture inside to find the ball, and everyone else follows. “Click” really builds an entire character out of this abandoned hospital, and viewers will constantly sit awaiting a huge bang, when director Prince offers none at all. When the group enters in to a small room, the oldest boy begins clicking the light on and off and they decide to close the room and enjoy the flickering lights.

When the youngest boy disappears in the middle of the flickering lights, the group tries to figure out where he went. Things then go from curious to terrifying in mere minutes. What helps sell “Click” are the performances, as every cast member offers a genuine portrayal of sheer terror and anxiety, especially when more kids begin to disappear in the flickering lights. “Click” is a masterful short horror film and one worthy of a large audience. It spooked me to no end.

Fear of the unknown is perhaps one of the greatest elements of horror.
