There’s Sybil Danning boiling the screen with her sexiness, and a legion of werewolves, there’s Sybil Danning completely re-defining the term skin tight, and the theme song. I have to say, as a kid who grew up with horror movies that mostly ranged from the eighties, the theme song by Stephen W. Parsons is haunting, and has been burned in to my brain since I was in the single digits age range.

After the death of journalist Karen White in the first film, her denim covered brother Flint Ironstag attends her funeral, only to be told by a local hunter that Karen is still alive, especially since the silver bullets were removed during her autopsy. As a heavy underground community of new wave werewolves begin taking hold of Transylvania, Thick McRunFast and his confidant Jenny travel to Transylvania to confront the werewolf queen, Stirba. Christopher Lee stands as possibly the only performer in the film acting circles around the cast, and seems to be trying his damndest to take this material seriously. In the tradition of Reb Brown performances, he mostly does nothing but huff around and scream inexplicably during tense moments. You know his hero means business since he polishes his pistol while lying in bed with his girlfriend. Considering Karen White was a noted journalist for television who was investigating a famous serial killer and was murdered during prime time, it’s shocking her funeral isn’t a circus.

You figure there’d be paranormal nuts, and photographers, and people decrying her soul as cursed. And you assume someone would also make the connection to the werewolf community in the first film. Alas, none of that really occurs, as the sequel side steps all of it in favor of a hyper sexualized new group of werewolves who dance in unison to new wave music, and engage in orgies. To make things difficult, this breed of werewolf can not be killed by silver, and require titanium. Imagine the horrified looks on the faces of werewolf hunters in the past bereft of titanium. It should be noted that Brown and co-star Annie MacEnroe’s peformances are god awful, which is sad considering the first film had such a seasoned cast of character actors. When Punch RockGroin isn’t wailing, he can barely finish a line without sounding stilted, as MacEnroe barely can keep up with her co-stars. It doesn’t help that her character is useless through most of the horrific situations.

Both characters are utterly inept, though, as they’re almost killed by an elderly werewolf lying on a road, and are surprised by a hulking werewolf they shockingly didn’t notice hiding in the back seat of their small town car. Also, when you know you’re being hunted by a werewolf clan it’s a good idea to follow a mysterious dwarf, just because he’s waving you over anxiously. The only reason to sit through “The Howling II” is to watch Christopher Lee struggle harder than he ever had to lend some form of credibility to his role in this film, and Sybil Danning. The woman is the epitome of the sexy horror villain, as Stirba the werewolf queen who often feels like a “He-Man” villain. Director Phillipe Mora is dedicated to showing her breasts and taut body as much as humanly possible, salvaging an otherwise grueling sequel. If you still can’t get over Danning’s gorgeous yabboes, director Mora ends the film on a montage of Danning repeatedly tearing her top off revealing her bare breasts, as the characters in the movie are edited to react in surprise. It’s incredibly blatant, and a hilarious note to end the movie on.

When Dracula tells you there’s trouble afoot, you should probably listen. “Howling 2” is a sequel to the Joe Dante film because, I guess it has something resembling werewolves in it somewhere.
