One thing that director Paul Greengrass seems intent on exploring is that “Captain Phillips” by no means turns in to “Air Force One.” Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips doesn’t fight people, he doesn’t gain the ability to operate hand guns, and there isn’t a catchy one liners he spouts at his Samalian kidnappers. Captain Phillips is first and foremost a human being under very stressful conditions, doing whatever he can to keep his crew alive. Even if it means sacrificing himself. Tom Hanks gives one of the most amazing performances of his career, playing what is one of the most average men thrust in to a perilous situation.<\/p>\n

Phillips is a man dreading going out to sea. Though he loves being a captain, and enjoys his work, he’s a victim to his anxieties of the potential for his ship to be taken over by pirates. When we first see him, he’s preparing for a day out at sea, and seems very anxious about leaving his wife (Catherine Keener in a very small role), who he sees off at the airport. What ensues is the manifestation of Phillips’ own anxieties and fears, and what he does to ensure that the people around him are kept safe. Hanks as Phillips is one of his most average characters, as Phillips garners something of a hunch, is balding, and speaks in very unassuming dialogue that often resembles mumbling.<\/p>\n

Out at sea, his ship is taken over by a group of Samalian pirates intent on taking whatever they can from the ship. Phillips thinks fast and begins a long series of waiting out his captors, and outwitting them the best he can, while also using his non-threatening demeanor as a means of keeping them at bay quite often. Phillips is a man constantly thinking on his feet, bus is also always on the verge of committing a fatal error. The pirates that invade and storm the ship are panicky and wired, thus they’re willing to do whatever it takes to get their mission fulfilled.<\/p>\n

Greengrass focuses heavily on facial expressions and mild bodily quirks that keep the tension thick and often times inspire the audience to stay on edge. Especially when Phillips does whatever he can to keep the pirates from discovering the crew in the bowels of the ship. Greengrass is also very wise to explore the lives of the Samalian pirates to some degree by sprinkling in moments and dialogue that reveal their goals for taking the ship hostage and why they’re insistent on going through with it. Greengrass adds a volume of empathy to the pirates to where we’re able to form some pathos, but never enough to where we root for them to survive.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, Phillips is being victimized and potentially will be murdered, and he struggles to keep his temper and emotions balanced, while also hoping to see another day alive. “Captain Phillips” is consistently exciting and tense with Hanks and co-star Barkhad Adbi giving truly excellent performances. The final scenes alone, make “Captain Phillips” worthy of being called a masterpiece. It’s one of the many roles where Hanks’ usual larger than life personality is admirable dialed down in favor of a humanistic portrayal that’s riveting and heartbreaking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
