I have to give it to Joseph L. Martinez, “Knock” is a fun and scary Halloween treat that should be watched by folks that like their scares short but sweet. “Knock” is based around a simple premise but ends on a delightfully clever bang. Murielle just spent Halloween night with her friends in an abandoned mine. Said mine allegedly houses the spirit of an ancient witch who stalks you if you knock on the mine walls three times.<\/p>\n

Murielle arrives home and is horrified she’s being stalked, even barricading the door to her bedroom. When her friend Emma arrives to find Murielle hiding under her bed, the two experience what might be the witch coming for her own Halloween misadventure. Martinez is very good at pacing and delivering a fine hook, making the welfare of Murielle instantly suspenseful. He invokes the Halloween aesthetic beautifully, deriving tension from the looming presence of what may or may not be the witch coming back to haunt someone who tempted fate a little too much.<\/p>\n

Director Martinez manages to derive considerable terror in five minutes, giving his shot film enough time and set up to pack home the gut punch of a surprise ending. I was afraid Martinez would foreshadow his twist too early, but thankfully “Knock” ends just right. For anyone in the mood for a great Halloween fix, “Knock” is a damn good horror movie with a great twist on urban legends, and very good performances by its trio of cast members. I hope we see more from director Martinez in the future.<\/p>\n
