It’s rumination on the beauty of life and how senseless it can be. But Holly also observes that the beauty of life can be in how senseless and unpredictable it tends to be. Surely, people die for no reason, especially good people, but there’s a lot of amazing things that happen without prediction either. Often times some of the best moments of our lives happened spontaneously like fireworks from the darkness.

But like some of the best moments, life is fleeting as well, and all too brief. In “Coda,” a drunken man stumbles out from a pub one night, and despite warnings to be careful, he’s hit by a car and dies in an instant. From his body, his soul emerges, left to wander around the landscape, as the cloak of death stalks him and tries to convince him that it’s time to accept his fate and that she’s tasked with bringing him to where ever souls go after death. The animation by Holly and co. is elegant and poetic, relying on a lot of familiar imagery to remind us of why this poor soul wants to stay alive, or at least be given more time.

Death grants him more time, reflecting upon him some of the best times he’s ever experienced. A lot of what occurs is left for interpretation, but I viewed “Coda” as an exploration of how death can be peaceful and somewhat a sweet form of being reborn. Perhaps death is the final fireworks show from the darkness that we all must experience, and we’re left to slumber for all eternity. “Coda” is an outstanding short film, and one that deserves to be watched over and over.

Coda from and maps and plans on Vimeo.

Alan Holly’s “Coda” is a remarkable and beautiful animated masterpiece.
