Most times horror movies have to have mood, and tone, and aesthetic, and pacing. Some of the greatest horror movies have a distinctive style all their own and are helped by their cinematographer. Director Jed Hart’s “Daddy’s Girl” is a very good and very creepy short film, and his short is improved ten fold by the amazing cinematography by Craig Dean Devine.

Dean Devine’s photography is amazing and sets the stage for what is a very slow build horror movie that ends with a bang. Not only does the finale really surprise you without resorting to a cheap jump scare, but when we finally reach the resolution, it’s kind of a heartbreaking little twist. Vince is a workaday prison guard who is driving home one evening hoping to make it back to his wife and daughter before her bedtime. After crashing in to a lone bike on the road, he tracks the owner, young Jessica, in to the woods and realizes that she might be in trouble.

Hart’s film really builds up to a great little finisher that I was sucked in to the very end. Hart leaves clues around for the audience, and places our hero in an environment that could be the very definition of doom for him. Especially based on the way director Hart frames every scene accompanied by cinematographer Craig Dean Devine resulting in a film that resonates with a haunting beauty. “Daddy’s Girl” is a bang up horror short with a fine execution from Jed Hart. I really hope he continues his filmmaking career, because if “Daddy’s Girl” is any indication, he’s due to deliver a masterpiece very soon.

It’s not enough to just make a horror movie.
