It’s “Ghoulies” meets “Sorority Girls in the Slimeball Bowl o Rama” and it has a fun concept to follow its mixing of sub-genres. “Chubbies” left me laughing, rolling my eyes, and gazing in sheer disbelief at what director Chris Hartman was able to pull off. In the planet Snerd, sex has been outlawed and all forms of sexual stimulation are illegal. When a group of sex hungry aliens known as Chubbies break free from their jails, they crash land on Earth. They end up at the local Bowl-o-Rama where a group of friends are having their very own Halloween party after hours.

After learning about the threat of the chubbies, they realize they’re stuck in doors with the horny monsters, as the bowling rink locks down until dawn. Now it’s up to a hunter from space and the friends to hunt down and kill the Chubbies before they begin taking over Earth. They do that by crawling up the butts of their victims, and even worse, they can breed when they crawl up the rectum of a woman, which is something everyone is attempting to prevent. “Chubbies” is a silly and painfully over the top monster movie that ends up being fun party movie fodder, if only for its ability to handle the premise in a tongue in cheek fashion. The idea of monsters climbing up the butts of their victims is funny enough, but director Hartman fashions the monsters themselves in the vein of classic Boglins toys.

They look a lot like the aforementioned eighties minions, and allow the cast to have a good time battling the monsters, and splashing immense amounts of gore on the screen. The cast seems to have a good time playing their respective roles, and Hartman makes good use of the single setting, giving the characters a lot of room to battle the monsters, and pray they make it to dawn. Director Hartman always knows what kind of film he’s making, so his monster film is steeped in eighties sleaze with gratuitous sex, nudity, and a ton of gore, as well as an obligatory question mark endings. “Chubbies” is a very simple and low budget indie horror comedy that I’d love to see a sequel for, somewhere down the line. Hartman obviously has a love for the mini-monsters of the eighties, and “Chubbies” has some great material for a follow up.

Despite being very rough around the edges, and at times shoddily edited, “Chubbies” is a film that has its heart in the right place.
