Felix Vasquez. In the minority. Again. It’s a comfortable place, I’ve built an ass groove, and everything. Anyway. “Easy A” is one of the most smug movies of 2010, and when I mean smug, I mean every single inch of dialogue is so intent on being clever and some sort of bon mot, that there’s simply no humanity to the story. For a movie that purports to be a comedy, it is so focused on being funny, it fails to be remotely humorous, and every character spouts at least four or five one-liners in succession, moving along a story that is supposed to be as in vogue and hip as a normal MTV show. Trust me when I say I wanted to love “Easy A” but it’s so gratingly self-aware in its pursuit to convince audiences that it’s so much more clever than we realize, that it fails to be entertaining or engrossing.

It is something of remake of “The Scarlet Letter” with a big hefty take off from “Ferris Bueller.” Character Olive is so self-aware she draws attention to her witty one-liners in her narration which she proclaims to be self-aware, and she lives with two parents so absolutely liberal they barely draw attention to a small argument in school, and her insistence on bringing a boy to her room. While I am a fan of Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson, they feel like two people attempting to imitate Robert Altman characters with winks and snickers to one another as they repeat the same lines over and over to one another to indicate that their relationship is so special, they have jokes we can’t possibly understand. Get this… on their bucket list… they have “Watch The Bucket List” listed!

Oh man, I love self-self-aware humor! Olive is so clever she is funnier than we can possibly understand. And rather than use the mark of the A as a stain on her soul, Alice is so cool she turns it in to a fashion trend. Yes, today’s girl is so proud of sleeping with someone (fictitious or not) that she’ll don the A proudly! You go girl! Far be it for me to be confused for as Conservative, but liberals aren’t this moronic. We don’t all embrace sexuality so much that we’re always happy with our children sleeping with one another. Do I like Emma Stone? Of course I do. She’s gorgeous and hilarious and sexy, but she slums it in a film that’s so absolutely cosmopolitan that this hideous cocky bravado seeps from every orifice of its narrative and premise to where even the militantly religious are hip and self-satisfied.

By the end of the movie, any point “Easy A” seems to be making when Olive begins to become confused with an actual whore is lost collapsing in on itself in a sea of cheesy clichés and a finale so insistently unoriginal it can barely create its own iconic moment, and instead just literally borrows moments from eighties films as if to declare “We’re so cute, we don’t have to be original! That’s the joke!” Heaven forbid I should go in to a comedy these days expecting originality or even the slightest bit amusement not reliant on reminding us that they know we’re watching a movie. Stuck in the minority, “Easy A” is not the win everyone in America declared it to be in 2010. As a comedy and a romance it’s one of the most smug and obnoxiously self-aware films I’ve ever seen intent on fashioning eighties clichés in to the illusion of a film, rather than devising its own iconic moments and humor. My love for Emma Stone continues far beyond the reaches of this putrid junk.

Hi there, this is me. Felix Vasquez. In the minority. Again.
