\"green-room\"<\/a>Jeremy Saulnier has a habit for taking the characters he writes and literally throwing them in to the furnace to be scorched. With \u201cBlue Ruin\u201d he set his character down a path of destructive revenge, and in \u201cGreen Room\u201d he takes absolutely zero prisoners. He doesn’t just build on four characters that end up in the wrong place in the wrong time, but he punishes them severely. \u201cGreen Room\u201d is yet another superb dramatic thriller about innocence succumbing to evil that’s beyond pure emotion and impulse. Patrick Stewart’s character is a villain who works with a horrific sense of swiftness and cold instruction like a businessman trying to clean up an insignificant spill. The moment we meet him he’s a man unencumbered by emotion or anger, despite the fact every move he makes could mean the end of his lifestyle as he knows it.<\/p>\n

When he stomps on to the screen he works like a surgeon, crafting every movement possible and preparing the fates of the five poor bastards that are cornered in the green room of his greasy dive. This spells inevitable doom for the four teenagers that have found themselves trapped in a green room, as they are operating on pure emotion and adrenaline and gradually realize that the deck is stacked against them. \u201cGreen Room\u201d centers on Pat, Sam, Reece, and Tiger, four musicians for their punk band the \u201cAin’t Rights.\u201d They’re traveling across America for a tour that’s delivering zero financial returns. At the last minute they accept a new gig for a club out in the middle of the Oregon back woods run by neo-Nazi skinheads. Despite a rocky start, the group eventually wins over the crowd with their music, and is just about ready to leave.<\/p>\n

On the way out, though, they accidentally walk in on a murder that just ensued in the club’s green room involving a bad drug deal. Terrified and panicked, they hide in the green room with the club’s manager as their hostage. But when club owner Darcy arrives, he’s prepared to do whatever it takes to hide the murder, thus a fight for survival ensues. \u201cGreen Room\u201d is a pitch black thriller with almost no sense of hope or salvation for our characters. We the audience just know that there simply is no talking their way out of this situation, especially when we realize how unprepared they are to deal with such a circumstance. Saulnier examines how this situation is ultimately the explosive result of the group’s paranoia, and inherent terror.<\/p>\n

Not to mention villain Darcy is very much about operating alongside young, drunken, and very anxious young men, all of whom are prepared to murder at his command when they fear their home is being intruded upon. \u201cGreen Room\u201d sets our characters up to fail from square one and Saulnier grabs the audience with what amounts to a pretty raw and violent battle for survival. The performances all around are excellent, from Yelchin, and Alia Shawkat, to Macon Blair and Patrick Stewart. Jeremy Saulnier is brilliant in depicting a darker and more unforgiving America, and what results in \u201cGreen Room\u201d is a disturbing and chaotic tale of class warfare and cold, calculating evil.<\/p>\n
