This year I watched so many movies, and as always, my opinion is never gospel or the final word on any film. In 2016 I managed to like a few movies that were critically destroyed and I don’t apologize for finding value in these flops. I probably won’t go out to buy them, but I won’t flip the channel if they’re ever on cable, either.

What were some movies you liked that everyone else didn’t? Let me know in the comments.

Warcraft
Directed by Duncan Jones
Original Review
Hey I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece, because I’m convinced there will never be a video game movie that’ll be a genuine masterpiece. Hope springs eternal though. But I had fun with “Warcraft.” Yes, it packs in a lot of back story, and it’s painfully hard to follow in the first half hour. But I dug it. I liked the storyline, I was invested in the characters, and I even liked the ideas about religious corruption. The movie flopped in America, but internationally it was a booming success, so we have many more movies on the way in the “Warcraft” universe. I might visit those sequels.

Gods of Egypt
Directed by Alex Proyas
Original Review
It’s silly, it’s white washed, but it’s a neat looking movie with a plot that’s about as deep and complex as a Saturday morning cartoon. Watching “Gods of Egypt” is like sitting through a goofy action cartoon about gods that can turn in to birds, and giant statues, and chariots that control night and day, and a magic eye. Alex Proyas is a great director, despite “Gods of Egypt” being universally panned. I’d love to see more movies about people turning in to metallic birds. What? I would.

Ratchet and Clank
Directed by Brian Allgeier
Original Review
Surely the animated adaptation of the hit video game series didn’t set the world on fire, but I’m not one of the folks that thought it was a mess either. It was a serviceable and fun animated movie with some neat animation, and fun scifi action. It even inspired me to learn more about the video games. I wouldn’t mind seeing another installment with these characters on the big screen.

Kickboxer: Vengeance
Directed by John Stockwell
Original Review
This is more a remake of the original movie than a reboot, giving Van Damme more of a mentor role this time out. He at least has something to do in the film, and also gets to kick some ass. There’s also Bautista who is insanely monstrous as a vicious martial arts master. I’m sure the series will continue whether we like it or not, but as a neat bit of quick escapism, I dug “Vengeance.”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again
Directed by Kenny Ortega
Original Review
If it came down to it, I’ll always pick the original movie with Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, but the TV remake wasn’t the piece of garbage everyone else thought of it as. It had good production values, good intentions albeit with a distracting meta-story frame, and the casting was aces. Laverne Cox is gorgeous and fun as Frank-N-Furter, and Victoria Justice and Ryan McCartan are solid in their respective roles. Hell, I’d pay to watch Victoria Justice read assembly instructions for Ikea furniture, I admit. That bias aside, I had a good time with “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.”

With movie critics getting more and more stigmatized by bitter movie studios and petty film directors, it’s a good thing to know in the end that they’re all just opinions.
