The follow up is a turning point for the movies where the writers put the more popular side characters in to the forefront. This time around Fester and the kids get so much more focus, as Barry Sonnenfeld allows Fester more of the spotlight this time around. After the big reveal in the first film, Morticia and Gomez have a baby boy and much to their disappointment, Wednesday and Pugsley hate him. Despite making their feelings quite apparent, they persist in trying to kill their new baby brother, causing more headaches for their parents.

Deciding to hire a nanny for the baby, they cross paths with Debbie, an attractive and open minded nanny who takes a liking to Fester, and begins forming a bond with him. Little do they know that she’s a psychotic serial killer who is prone to marrying, and murdering her wealthy husbands. Aware Fester stands to inherit the Addams fortune, she marries him and persuades him to disconnect with his family and turn his fortune to her. With Debbie holding him hostage, the family must figure out how to save their uncle. This becomes especially difficult with Wednesday and Pugsley being held hostage in horrendous summer camp run by two over joyous and maniacal counselors (Christina Baranski and Peter MacNicol).

“Addams Family Values” suffers mainly because it feels less like a sequel and more like a series of episodes tied together to form a movie. Much of what happens to Wednesday and Pugsley and to Fester doesn’t have much of a connection, and there also never seems to be much of a reason for Gomez and Morticia to send them away. It’s hard to believe such a tight knit family could be convinced so easily to send their children away. The repeated attempts to kill Fester by Debbie also begins as a funny bit of cartoon humor, but then becomes much too sinister to find all that comedic.

That said, it is interesting to view the juxtaposition of the menacing Addams and the equally menacing Debbie, who is very much like the brood, but much less a whimsical character and a lot more of a real world murderer. Joan Cusack is also very good in the role of Debbie, using her ability to go from sweet to shrill to seconds flat to the benefit of her villain. “Addams Family Values” emphasizes the fish out of water element of the first film with a much more amusing sense of humor, as well as allowing Pugsley and Wednesday to be more fleshed out characters, as well as unlikely heroes. While the sequel is no masterpiece, it’s a strong follow up and end for this welcome iteration of the series. I wish it’d been more warmly received, allowing for a third entry with this marvelous cast and crew.

With the success of the first installment of the nineties “Addams Family” (however minimal), a sequel was only inevitable.
