As he searches for her, something is clearly not as it should be.

Written and directed by Alexander Rönnberg, Filippa plays on parental fears and a father’s wants, hopes, dreams, and nightmares. The short film does so by showing just a small activity between a father and daughter and adding a fear element that just about any parent can relate too. Here that fear of losing a child gets more complex as the film advances and does so in subtle, nuanced ways that give the film a power over the viewer that is strong, impressive, and soft all at the same time. It’s one of those shorts that does not put things up in the viewer’s face and lets the viewer find their own fear and dread in the story. The film builds a nice family vibe and then adds this fear slowly and sneakily at first and then it all adds up to a sense of dread that permeates the atmosphere.

The acting in the short is on point and talented, like the film’s writing and direction, with subtle, nuanced perfromances, especially from the father who gets most of the screen time. He gives a performance that sets the tone and grounds the film. His search for his daughter gives vibes of just about any parent looking for a missing child. How he escalates his performance little by little gives the film its impact.

The film is shot in a fantastic location, the woods in Northern Europe, and a beautiful family house that looks and feels absolutely normal, not like something should be dreaded. The film uses the house and the woods perfectly well for its needs and to set the tone and atmosphere. The nature elements around the house make it feel serene almost while the story creates the dread and fear within that setting.

Filippa is an atmospheric film that uses nature and the ineherent fear of losing a child that is in any parent to set a tone and dread that works its way up in intensity throughout the film. The short format works great here, giving just enough time for the story to develop but none to get to complex or complicated. Filippa is a beautiful film about the fear and sadness associated with losing a child, a delicate subject handled perfectly.

A father comes home to his daughter playfully wanting to play hide and seek.
