As they make new memories and make the day special, their father-daughter bond strengthens.

Written and directed by Mat Johns, A Father’s Day creates a relationship that shows how strong the bonds between a father and daughter can be in a gut-punch of a short film. He uses the zombie apocalypse as a backdrop to show family bonds and how people can relate to each other. It’s a simple set up, yet it contains so many layers and so much in terms of emotional baggage. The film shows different levels of zombies and different levels of human interactions and bonds.

Playing the father and daughter zombies are Garth Maunders and Hazel Gibson. Their acting is stunted but that makes sense as they are zombies. All their emotions are shown minimally on their faces and through grunts and moans like zombies should. Their acting is stunted, but nuanced and works to play up the level of their bond and love even after death.

The effects in this short are done with clear talent under prosthetics makeup artist supervisor Shaune Harrison and lead prothetics makeup artist Brogan Sharp. The zombies each have their own look but also look coherent as a group. The work here is what establishes the levels of zombies and how they are represented. The film shows mostly the father and daughter for who the makeup and prosthetic are point and just gross enough.

A Father’s Day takes an over-used sub-genre in horror and gives it new life by working the human bond angle instead of the empty shells angle. The zombies here have some of their mental capacities left to them and their memories of what they were and who they loved are still there somewhat, creating situations like the one seen here, where a father and his daughter find each other and want to make the most of the time they have left until their faculties are completely gone. It’s a sweet and melancholy story about what people’s basic instincts are and how love comes into play.

A man meets a young girl as they both are zombies and shuffling through life.
