That said, 2017 did produce some stinkers, some of which I didn&#8217;t get to see in time for the list&#8217;s completion, and some films that I just could not muster up the stomach to sit through. Dirty Dancing<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by Wayne Blair<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ABC<br \/>\nRelease Date: May 24<sup>th<br \/>\n<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cDirty Dancing\u201d is a favorite of mine, and say what you want about it, but it\u2019s a catchy, fun and breezy romance musical. The TV movie remake that was made for the sole intention of cashing in on the anniversary of the film is the antithesis of everything the movie pushed for. It\u2019s dark, dull, monotonous, the performances are lackluster, and the finale is such a shameless rip off of \u201cLa La Land,\u201d that I was pretty embarrassed for everyone involved by the time the credits began.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>Bye Bye Birdie (1963)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/alien-cov.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27279 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/alien-cov.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/alien-cov.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/alien-cov-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/alien-cov-2x1.jpg 2w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><strong>9. Alien: Covenant<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by Ridley Scott<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox<br \/>\nRelease Date: May 19<sup>th<br \/>\n<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cAVP\u201d and \u201cAVP: Requiem\u201d were dumb movies, but \u201cCovenant\u201d dumbs down the mythology for an entirely new generation of movie lovers. Ridley Scott rather than stay the course, shifts tones in a nasty, boring, and ridiculous movie that chronicles dumb poorly sketched characters, charting another alien planet and getting in to deep when they prove to be too stupid to live. The long drawn out pseudo-philosophy and goofy hack and slash ending, along with a brutally predictable surprise twist in the climax proves this series needs to be put to sleep for a decade and revived with new minds behind it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>Alien (1980)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/leatherface-2017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27280 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/leatherface-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/leatherface-2017.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/leatherface-2017-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/leatherface-2017-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><strong>8. <\/strong><strong>Leatherface<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by<\/strong><strong> Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Lionsgate<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Release Date: <\/strong><strong>October 20th<br \/>\n<\/strong>Despicable, nasty, unpleasant, vicious, vile, and painfully derivative, \u201cLeatherface\u201d is another radical attempt to explain Leatherface, a character who worked more as an inexplicable force of violence and sexual aggression in Tobe Hooper\u2019s original film. Allegedly the \u201creal\u201d origin of Leatherface, and the origin of his family, \u201cLeatherface\u201d works at being a goofy road film that views the character as some tragic but truly vicious psychopath. It\u2019s a garbage reboot, and the producers seem to know it, having decided to reboot Hooper\u2019s movie series yet again after this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>The Devil\u2019s Rejects (2004)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-Mummy-2017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27281 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-Mummy-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-Mummy-2017.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-Mummy-2017-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/The-Mummy-2017-2x1.jpg 2w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><strong>7. The Mummy<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by Alex Kurtzman<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUniversal<br \/>\nRelease Date: June 9th<br \/>\n<\/strong>You could almost feel the executives at Universal patting themselves on the back about the \u201cDark Universe\u201d logo before \u201cThe Mummy\u201d ever arrived in theaters. On paper this radical re-imagining of \u201cThe Mummy\u201d sounds fun, especially with a woman in place of Karloff, but \u201cThe Mummy\u201d takes every single wrong turn with a shift in genre, opting for a grand scale remake, rather than something simple and atmospheric and so much more concerned with world building than focusing on creating a coherent story with great characters. And who can forget the writers shamelessly ripping off \u201cAn American Werewolf in London\u201d? RIP Dark Universe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>The Mummy (1999)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/snatched.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27276 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/snatched.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/snatched.jpg 614w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/snatched-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/snatched-2x1.jpg 2w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><strong>6. <\/strong><strong>Snatched<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by Jonathan Levine<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox<br \/>\nRelease Date: May 12th<br \/>\n<\/strong>I think I\u2019m about done with Amy Schumer\u2019s shtick for a while, as the woman who loves to do everything to prove she\u2019s not the conventional woman has worn her goofy gimmick thin. In yet another movie where Schumer is a flaky, alcoholic, slob with man troubles, she brings along poor Goldie Hawn for what is a nasty, dull, and brutally unfunny mix of black comedy, xenophobia, survival action, and they even wedge in a mom and daughter dramedy somewhere. I think Schumer should take a break for a while, or at least invent a new character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>Romancing the Stone (1984)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bye-Bye-Man.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bye-Bye-Man.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bye-Bye-Man.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bye-Bye-Man-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bye-Bye-Man-2x1.jpg 2w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><strong>5. <\/strong><strong>The Bye Bye Man<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by Stacy Title<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nSTX Entertainment<br \/>\nRelease Date: January 13th<br \/>\n<\/strong>This feels like a movie made about a decade too late where it might have been released during a time when studios were releasing PG-13 pseudo-Asian horror films \u00a0\u201cThe Bye Bye Man\u201d desperately wants to be The Slender Man but fails at every turn to be even remotely intriguing. It also wastes Doug Jones in a pointless role in what is one of the least intimidating movie monsters since the Leprechaun. There\u2019s stuff about coins and trains that never connect, there\u2019s people murdering people to keep you from saying \u201cBye Bye,\u201d one of the most common phrases in the English language\u2014along with the goofy fake out finale, it\u2019s a waste of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>The Babadook (2014)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/emoji.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/emoji.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/emoji.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/emoji-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/emoji-2x1.jpg 2w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><strong>4. The Emoji Movie<br \/>\nDirected by Tony Leondis<br \/>\nSony Pictures<br \/>\nRelease Date: May 2nd<br \/>\n<\/strong>This isn\u2019t really a movie so much as an ad based ninety minute pool of nothing made up of algorithms that calculated trends, and memes that would click in to an audience devoted to their smart phones. This feels like a movie that was created by one of Professor Frink\u2019s overly complicated but faulty robots from \u201cThe Simpsons.\u201d There\u2019s a good movie to be made about emojis and how we communicate in modern times. Made. \u201cRings\u201d attempts to re-invent the mythology of Samara in to this hip, edgy, modern millennial horror tale involving the internet and viral videos. Granted, I think the idea of transferring Samara\u2019s horror over in to the world wide web, \u201cRings\u201d manages to be painfully dull, tedious, monotonous, and pointless. And yes, Johnny Galecki seems stuffed in this movie for the mere fact that \u201cThe Big Bang Theory\u201d is a popular in vogue show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>Ju-On: The Grudge (2003)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/chips.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27271 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/chips.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/chips.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/chips-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cinema-crazed.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/chips-3x1.jpg 3w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><strong>2.<\/strong><strong> CHiPs<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Directed by Dax Shepard<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nWarner Bros. Pictures<br \/>\nRelease Date: March 24<sup>th<br \/>\n<\/sup><\/strong>Dax Shephard, who has no business making a movie, takes \u201cCHiPS,\u201d transforms it in to a terrible vanity project, and completely missed the point of the show in favor of his ego. Anyone who is anyone knows that Ponch was the most loved character on the series, and Dax turns him in to a boring side character who isn\u2019t funny and has a creepy obsession with large butts. Meanwhile the lesser of the pair is played by Shephard who, with his equally unfunny wife, tries to turn \u201cCHiPS\u201d in to a weird mash up of ultra violence, satire, meta-comedy, dark comedy, meta-spoof, and juvenile humor. \u201cCHiPS\u201d is a miasma is nonsense. Simmons<br \/>\nUniversal Studios<br \/>\nRelease Date: October 20<sup>th<br \/>\n<\/sup><\/strong>I\u2019ve seen inept thrillers before but man oh man I\u2019ve never seen a movie with such a simple premise be so unnecessarily convoluted before. \u201cThe Snowman\u201d wouldn\u2019t be such a bad movie if it had at leas some kind of redeeming qualities to it. But watching it, it\u2019s clear that the movie is just incomplete, stitched together for the sake of salvaging nonsense. At the very least, you can enjoy the beautiful wide shots and the endless brilliant actors that the movie trots in and wastes so spectacularly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I fondly remember wanting to see \u201cThe Snowman\u201d when the trailer first premiered, but it became apparent nothing about this movie was salvageable when I sat inadvertently chuckling and gaffing in disbelief throughout the duration. I could pick this movie apart relentlessly, but to echo other writers, I sense this will become a \u201cBest Worst Movie\u201d like \u201cThe Wicker Man\u201d remake in five years. Until next time, Harry Hole.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Instead: <\/strong>The Bone Collector (1999)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Movie\/s Many Disliked Except Us:<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Justice League<br \/>\n<\/strong>It\u2019s not that bad of a movie if you can meet it halfway. It\u2019s rushed, and cobbled together, and tonally odd, but the character dynamic is fun, the action is a neat diversion and Superman is pretty awesome here, given his own fun and awe inspiring moments, including the opening scene involving the cell phone camera.
