Thanks to a online campaign from fans to allow Richard Donner to complete the film he was kicked off of, Donner finally was able to release his own version of the movie on DVD with some alterations, and major story changes. Back in 1980, when Donner was replaced by Richard Lester, many of the cast and crew followed with him. This time Donner is able to not only show what he had in store for much of his own Superman sequel, but also showed that he had a much more mature mind set in regards to the second outing for Superman on the big screen.

There’s much less camp and comedy this time around, while “Superman II” is a much darker and much more adult look at Superman and his legacy. Surely, some people are split on the final scene which integrate Superman spinning the Earth backward once again, but by that time Donner ran out of footage to include, so what else could he have done? “The Richard Donner Cut” is a vastly superior edition that follows the original cut of the film somewhat, but goes off on its own tangents. There are many more scenes where Lois is attempting to prove Clark is Superman, thus there’s more tension in their relationship when they emerge in Niagra Falls. As well, the moment Lois discovers Clark is Superman, it’s a wonderful moment that topples the original revelation to a greater degree.

I’ve always found it ridiculous that Clark would fall in to a fire, when we learn in the first film that most of his actions are calculated for the sake of retaining his secret identity. He is able to catch a bullet with his hand and still hide it from Lois in the first film, and suddenly he falls in to the fire? The actions of Lois in the Donner Cut are much more in keeping with the character of Lois. She’s a bold and often times reckless in her pursuit to find the truth, so her test involving shooting at Clark is genius and typical of her character. She puts Clark in a corner to where he’s incapable of hiding his identity, thus the revelation is mind blowing and quite genius.

There are also many more moments of violence to display how vicious Zod and his followers tend to be, as they mercilessly murder a few people here and there. Granted, it’s mild violence but still an interesting display of their ruthlessness as villains. Richard Donner uses what footage he can acquire and with crafty editing and subtle CGI, is able to offer his fans a almost exact view in what he could have offered by way of a “Superman” sequel that was much more an adventure and dire crisis for Superman, and much less based around comedy and physical humor. Like most of the Superman films, it’s still a somewhat flawed product, but it’s an infinitely superior creation to Richard Lester’s lighter fare. To boot, it dismisses “Superman III,” which is a gigantic plus in the long run.

Buy It Now!

Countdown to “Man of Steel”!
