Written and directed by Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce, the faux documentary does a really good job of replicating documentaries about cult films and television shows with scenes from the show, interviews with the people involved, interviews with fans, etc. The footage created for the show and other sources looks and feels authentic; something needed to pull this type of film off. The writing and directing here are on point to make the viewer feel and believe that it\u2019s all real.<\/p>\n

The cast for Top Knot Detective is mostly composed of actors most viewers won\u2019t know which is important to pull something like this off. One of the most important parts here, one that gives the documentary feeling to the film, is the narrator who is Des Mangan. He goes a good version of the usual documentary and informational cinema tv hosts here as he gives the viewer information and directs their attention. In interview segments and bits of the television show, the \u201ccast\u201d of Top Knot Detective including Toshi Okuzakas as Takashi Takamoto our lead, Masa Yamaguchi as Haruto Kioke his co-star, Mayu Iwasaki as Mia Matsumoto and Izumi Wood a,,s Izumi Himura both playing the love interest on the fictional cult television show, all do this with a natural talent, embodying the actors and their respective parts. Their work allows the viewer to fully commit to the idea of this \u201cdocumentary\u201d creating a world of their own inside the film.<\/p>\n

Creating different looks and feels for each element in the film, between the interviews, show scenes, parts of other television shows, and newscasts, the crew behind Top Knot Detective had a lot of work. The cinematography by A.J. Coultier gives every section he worked on its own look while keeping every scene of each type coherent stylistically. Helping with this is the music by Malcolm Clark, Lance Robinson, and Mason Vellios which does the same, but for the audio. They add a special touch to scenes and help keep each section clearly identifiable.<\/p>\n

Top Knot Detective does something that has been seen more and more as of late and creates a faux documentary on a supposed cult television show that has never existed and may very well be more entertaining than a lot of actual television shows having aired and airing now. The film reminds of another faux documentary, Fury of the Demon, in how it approaches it subject, but as opposed to it, Top Knot Detective uses actors and not genre directors, creators, and journalist, giving it a bit of a more whimsical ton as opposed to the easily mistaken for a real documentary Fury of the Demon. Top Knot Detective is a fun watch and definitely entertaining, it makes one want to watch the fake television show it touts as so fantastic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
