I’d heard rumblings that it was basically “Castaway” meets “The Grey,” but that’s a complete misunderstanding of what “All is Lost” is striving for. “All is Lost” has two lines of dialogue, and only one character in it. Even “Castaway” about a man stuck on an island for many years couldn’t help stuffing the film with a slew of performers.

“All is Lost” is a unique and utterly difficult film to discuss mainly because it attempts something you’ve never seen before. Robert Redford is the only man on screen for a hundred minutes, and there’s mainly nothing but him running around and trying to survive. There are no inner monologues, and no sports equipment with faces on them for him to argue with. Which is not to say J.C. Chandor’s drama is a bad movie. It’s actually a very beautiful and intense piece of survival drama that focuses on man’s relationship with the sea and nature. Despite his better judgment, Redford’s character simply will not stop battling the elements, and will not cease in trying to save his boat. Set adrift in the sea, a sailor (Redford) accidentally runs in to a shipping container that punctures a hole in his boat.

Despite his inherent danger, he is relentless in his pursuit to patch up the boat and save his livelihood. When a massive storm rears its head during his efforts to save his boat, he may just have to battle nature for his own life. Redford gives a very powerful and utterly raw performance as the sailor who won’t go down, no matter how hard he’s hit by nature. His own hubris is his undoing, but it’s also what saves him nine times out of ten. Most of “All is Lost” is based around what we’re seeing the emotions that Redford’s character expresses during his plight. He’s a very resourceful man who scrambles to save his boat in the opening moments of the film, but also begins preparing for the worst, should he sink. Meanwhile, we’re given visual cues about his life, and why he’s so enamored with his boat.

Surely, it’s a treasure of his, and it’s one he goes to war with the elements over from beginning to end. Chandor’s direction paired with the editing provide a very taut and exhilarating drama that makes Redford’s character interesting and empathetic despite having no dialogue and little back story. Most of what we learn of him is displayed through his adamant attempts to save photo albums and pictures from the past, but little else is conveyed. Meanwhile much of the obstacles he endures are due to the weather and circumstances, and you root for his survival. Redford gives a very good performance as this character that’s able to channel his grief, exhaustion, and tireless efforts to save his boat well, and I was very engrossed in his predicament until the very end. “All is Lost” is a very unique and interesting look at the classic man vs. nature dichotomy, and will keep audiences compelled until the end.

If there was ever any doubt before of the acting ability of Robert Redford in his long career as a film star, then “All is Lost” may change many minds. “All is Lost” is very much a film I was not prepared for.
