It’s Sasquatchsploitation with a surprisingly tongue in cheek tone that undercuts all menace it possesses. And the good thing is that star Zach Galligan at least seems to be in on the joke. He sports a terrible Southern accent, is probably the worst father in the world, and really does nothing but puff his chest and go shooting at some sasquatches in the woods. “NightBeasts” doesn’t aim for “Abominable” levels of horror, but it’s worth a viewing, if only for Galligan who hams it up big time.

Galligan plays Charles, a big game hunter who goes away with his son to a cabin with his son Tim to teach him the skill, and soon realizes that they’re being tormented by mysterious beings in the woods. After local animals turn up dead, and the body count rises, Charles sets out to uncover a massive pact with the local Native American reservation and a clan of sasquatch in the woods. Much of the film is centered around Charles and his son trying to figure out what the sasquatch want, while the dominantly native american cast chew the scenery as goofy side characters or wise shamans that also double as exposition for the big mystery.

Many of these scenes drag on way too long, with Charles wandering around town asking about the folklore with his son. We’re then forced to sit through a big goofy performance where a Native American Medicine Man performs for Charles and the tourists, lying out the entire story with the sasquatch. And for some reason, even breaks in to a freestyle rap for his audience. “NightBeasts” is a horror comedy with a narrative that’s all over the place. Sometimes it’s a mystery, sometimes it’s a supernatural film, sometimes it’s just a campy B grade monster movie, and then it jumps right in to action movie territory. Rather than leave, or deciding to call in re-enforcements, Charles teams up with his son and the local sheriff to hunt down and stop the sasquatch.

They’d be terrifying if they weren’t so easily beaten, mind you. The make up and monster effects look pretty good, but the sasquatches aren’t very scary, especially when you watch Charles’ young preteen song Tim beat one to death with a hunting rifle. The hunt itself is a hilariously goofy sequence bereft of any tension or excitement, but director Sullivan really strives on planting his tongue firmly in his cheek by drawing laughter from the film’s inherent flaws. From the bad acting, to the shoddy editing, “NightBeasts” lands on its feet by embracing the flaws and deriving laughter from its audience. It’s definitely not a masterpiece of the sub-genre of sasquatch horror films, but it’s so surreal it definitely should be viewed by experimental horror fans.

You can purchase “Night Beasts” on DVD Here!

“NightBeasts” is a really silly, camp drenched movie.
