Case in point: The Rutles, The Blues Brothers, and Spinal Tap. And there are… others that I had fun remembering like The Archies and the Oneders. These are five of some of my favorite movie rock bands of all time. I excluded some at risk of being repetitive, but these are five that stood out for me and still stick with me.

5. Josie and the Pussycats – Josie and the Pussycats
Whether from the movie, the animated series (Cathy Douglas, Patrice Holloway, and Cheryl Ladd), or “Riverdale,” Josie and the Pussycats manage to crank out some great rock and pop music. Some of their better songs include obviously their title song from their animated series, and “3 Small Words” from the opening sequence of the movie. They’re a great band in either medium.

4. School of Rock – School of Rock
“School of Rock” only had one song as far as we know (if you don’t count the Nick show), but they rocked the house in the battle of the bands. Dewey and his band mates finally get the chance to show the world what they can do and it amounts to a wonderful and exciting climax where the newly formed band form a united front to kick some ass with “Zach’s Song.”

3. Sex Bob-Omb – Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Sex Bob-Omb is a fusion of punk rock, indie rock and video games, forming a wonderful combination of rage and angst only Scott Pilgrim is capable of. With band leader Stephen Stills on vocals and guitar, Scott Pilgrim on bass, Kim Pine on drums and Young Neil (the biggest fan and understudy bass), Sex Bob-Omb tries their hardest to be as good as if not better than Clash at Demonhead, and they just might do it. With or without G Man. You have to love “Garbage Truck.”

2. Stillwater – Almost Famous
The foursome of Russell Hammond, Jeff Bebe, John Fedevich, and Mark Kozelek form what is a pretty excellent righteous up and coming rock band that is trying to stand alongside titans like Zeppelin. They already have a lot going for them, but their worst enemy is the tension, secrets and regrets boiling beneath the surface. I love “Fever Dog,” personally. Fun Fact: The Untitled DVD Edition of “Almost Famous” has the complete album for Stillwater. Best purchase I’ve made in years.

1. Spın̈al Tap – This is Spın̈al Tap
Spın̈al Tap is that group that’s had to re-invent itself over the decades to survive, and when we see them in their mock documentary, it’s becoming harder to stay relevant. Spın̈al Tap is comprised of lead singer and co-lead guitarist David St. Hubbins, lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel, and bassist Derek Smalls, and they deliver on what they think is the music of the moment with elements of druidism, Satanism, hard rock, hair metal, and occasional ballads here and there. Their evolution over the course of “This is Spın̈al Tap” is both hilarious and sad, but they never stop rocking and never stop trying to give their fans the best head banging rock and roll.

Five Favorite Fictional TV Bands: California Dreams, Zack Attack, Jessie and the Rippers, Jem and the Holograms, Leather and the Suedes

Some of the best and most entertaining rock bands of all time come from pop culture; in particular there’s the rock bands of the movies, all of whom have some shocking contributions to make to actual music.
