Everyone has a price. It doesn’t matter how moral or just you think you are. At the end of the day someone will put down a price for your will, or strength, and you’ll eventually cash in on what they can offer. Whether money, sex, or possessions, everyone walks around with a price tag. And while “Would you Rather?” is by no means an amazing thriller, it really does succeed in commenting on the cruelty of humanity and how much people will endure for some cash.

Brittany Snow gives a very compelling performance as a young girl named Iris. Her brother is stricken with cancer, and is in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. The problem is he is dying and they can’t ensure a transplant. Iris is called in to the office of a friend who has an opportunity for her. Jeffrey Combs has a blast playing billionaire Shephard Lambrick, a businessman who is offering Iris a chance to save her brother. She just has to partake in a game of “Would you Rather?” at his house. If she completes the game, she wins an obscene amount of money and her brother’s surgery becomes top priority. “Would You Rather?” unfortunately goes down the predictable road from there, as Iris discovers she’s only one in a group of contestants vying for the reward money. What begins as a merely amusing game of testing gag reflexes soon escalates in to a violent series of tests that become ever more gruesome and disturbing as the night progresses.

“Would you Rather?” has a good time with its premise, delivering some grueling moments of torture, while Jeffrey Combs is deliciously slimy. He’s a sadist, and he is more than willing to help people as long as they degrade and torture one another for his pleasure. Brittany Snow also takes an empathetic turn as this anxious young girl who does literally anything it takes to help her brother. “Would you Rather?” really manages to rise above the entire torture premise with some unnerving tension, jabs at morality, and darkly comedic moments that will inspire uneasy laughter. That said, “Would You Rather?” falters mid-way with a sub-plot involving Iris’ doctor. He’s essentially the person to introduce her to Combs’ character, and once he garners a crises of conscience for allowing her to enter the deadly game, he seeks to help her. There’s a ton of build up to his sub-plot and his actions to help Iris and it literally goes nowhere.

The writer doesn’t seem to knows how to end or resolve his sub-plot, so it’s abruptly cut short and has absolutely zero effect to the narrative and how Iris ultimately decides how she’s going to finish the game. The ending also presents us with the clear indicator that the writer didn’t know how to really finish this narrative with a bow. It ends on a cruel and mean spirited note and the finale is about as ham fisted and heavy handed in its irony as any wise viewer would expect. Audiences keen to plot twists will follow Iris in to the dinner party and think “Wouldn’t it be sad if after all of this…?” And surely enough the script delivers on such a predictable romp. That said, even in its imperfection and eye rolling final twist, “Would You Rather?” is an entertaining and incredibly demented commentary on how easily our wills can break when given the proper price tag.

Buy It Here or Stream It!

Let’s face it.
